Because the message mentions a location you actually visited, it feels much more real, leading many people to click on dangerous links that steal their financial details.

Beyond personal data theft, AI is also being used to create deepfakes. A deepfake is a type of media, such as a video or audio recording, that has been changed by AI to make it look or sound like a real person said or did something they did not. The Australian Securities and Investment Commission (Asic) recently warned about a sharp increase in scams using deepfakes of famous people and politicians. In one example, a fake video of the Australian prime minister, Anthony Albanese, was used to promote a false investment platform. The video falsely promised that people could earn a large amount of money every month by investing a small sum.

Asic reports that these scams are becoming more dangerous because they often involve entire networks of fake websites, news articles, and reviews. These elements work together to make a fake investment look like a legitimate opportunity. According to Scamwatch, a government service that tracks fraud, Australians lost millions of dollars to these impersonation scams in the last year alone. The criminals often change the celebrities they copy based on current news, making sure their scams stay relevant to what people are talking about at the time.

Experts emphasize that the quality of these scams is improving, making them harder to spot. Sarah Court, the chair of Asic, noted that the presence of professional-looking websites or positive testimonials does not mean an investment is safe. She warned that AI is making these traps more convincing than ever before. Because scammers can now easily create high-quality content, a quick online search is often not enough to prove that a person or company is real.

So, how can you protect yourself? Experts suggest several important steps. First, be very careful about sharing photos on social media while you are still on vacation. It is safer to wait until you have returned home before posting your pictures. You should also change your privacy settings so that only people you know can see your content. If you receive a message that creates a sense of urgency—such as being told you must act immediately to stop a bank account from being closed—do not click any links. Instead, contact your bank or the company directly using a phone number or website you know is official.

When it comes to investments, Asic recommends that consumers check for a certified financial services license. However, because scammers sometimes lie about having these licenses, you should always check the official government registers to verify the information. If an investment opportunity promises returns that seem too good to be true, it is likely a scam. By staying alert and taking the time to check facts independently, you can significantly reduce the risk of becoming a victim of these modern digital threats.
