Australia Faces Wildlife Emergency as H5N1 Bird Flu Reaches Mainland

Australia has officially confirmed that the H5N1 bird flu has reached its mainland, ending the country’s status as the only continent in the world free of the virus. Federal agriculture minister Julie Collins confirmed this weekend that a brown skua, a type of wild migratory bird, died after being found sick in a national park in Western Australia. A second bird, a giant petrel found nearby, has also tested positive for the disease, with officials currently waiting for final confirmation from laboratory tests.

This virus, known as H5N1, is described as “highly pathogenic,” meaning it is very contagious and causes serious illness or death in animals. According to The Guardian, the virus has killed millions of birds and thousands of marine mammals across the globe since it began spreading in 2021. Dr. Ariful Islam, a veterinary epidemiologist at Charles Sturt University, calls the situation a “panzootic,” which means the disease has spread across many continents and affected a wide variety of species. Data from Wildlife Health Australia shows that more than 560 wild bird species and over 100 types of mammals have been affected by the virus worldwide.

The virus has been moving across the globe for several years, starting in Asia before spreading through Europe and the Americas. It reached Antarctica during the 2023-24 summer, where researchers believe it arrived on the Australian territory of Heard Island in August 2025. On that island, the virus caused significant harm, killing more than 13,000 southern elephant seal pups and hundreds of king penguins. Experts from BirdLife Australia believe the two birds recently found in Western Australia likely migrated to the mainland from the subantarctic region.

Currently, the main priority for the government is to find out if the virus has spread to other animals. Minister Collins stated that there is no evidence yet of mass deaths or infections in poultry, which are birds raised for food like chickens. The government is now starting a nationally coordinated response to monitor wildlife in the area. Dr. Islam emphasized that more environmental sampling is necessary to understand how the disease is moving and how it might affect the local environment.

This situation is different from the H7 bird flu outbreaks that affected Australian poultry farms in 2024 and 2025. Those earlier outbreaks led to the euthanizing—the act of putting animals to death to prevent suffering or the spread of disease—of hundreds of thousands of chickens. Dr. Michelle Wille, an expert at the University of Melbourne, noted that H5 has caused major problems for the poultry industry in other parts of the world. Because of this, the agricultural sector is watching the situation very closely.

While the arrival of the virus is a serious concern, officials are working quickly to manage the risk. The next few days will be critical as researchers complete further tests to see how widespread the infection might be. For now, the focus remains on protecting Australia’s unique wildlife and preventing the virus from entering commercial farms. As the situation develops, authorities are asking the public to report any sick or dead birds to local wildlife services to help with the monitoring effort.
