California Emergency: Thousands Evacuate Over Chemical Leak Fears

Authorities in Southern California have ordered 40,000 people to evacuate their homes as emergency crews race to prevent a major chemical accident. The crisis began at an aerospace manufacturing facility in the city of Garden Grove, owned by GKN Aerospace. A large storage tank at the site, which holds between 6,000 and 7,000 gallons of a chemical called methyl methacrylate, began to overheat and leak dangerous vapors on Thursday.

Methyl methacrylate is a highly flammable substance used to create plastics and resins for aircraft parts. According to the Orange County Fire Authority, the situation is extremely serious. Division Chief Craig Covey explained that the tank is in a state of crisis, and officials are preparing for two dangerous possibilities: the tank could either crack and spill thousands of gallons of toxic liquid, or it could undergo a thermal runaway—a process where the chemical reaction gets out of control—and explode. Such an explosion could potentially damage nearby tanks that also contain fuel or other chemicals.

By Friday, the evacuation orders had expanded to cover residents in six different cities, including Cypress, Stanton, Anaheim, Buena Park, and Westminster. While the facility is located about 38 miles south of downtown Los Angeles, it is less than a mile from popular theme parks. Officials noted that these parks were not under evacuation orders and remained open. However, local schools have closed as a precaution, and authorities have shut down several major road exits to limit traffic in the area.

Emergency teams have been working to cool the tank by spraying it with water. On Friday, officials initially believed they had successfully lowered the temperature using drones to monitor the heat. However, when crews were able to get closer to the tank to read the internal gauge, they discovered that the temperature was actually much higher than previously thought. By Saturday, officials reported that the internal temperature was continuing to rise by about one degree Fahrenheit every hour. Chief Covey stated that letting the tank fail and explode is unacceptable, and teams are developing aggressive plans to stabilize the situation.

To protect the environment, crews have built containment barriers using sandbags. These barriers are designed to prevent any spilled chemicals from entering storm drains, local creeks, or the nearby ocean. Dr. Regina Chinsio-Kwong, the county health officer, warned that the chemical vapors can be harmful to human health. Inhaling these vapors may cause respiratory problems, headaches, nausea, and irritation to the eyes. She advised that if residents smell a heavy, fruity odor, they should report it to authorities immediately, though she noted that smelling the vapor does not necessarily mean a person has reached a dangerous level of exposure.

For many residents, the evacuation order came as a sudden shock. Danny Pham, a local resident, told reporters that he was asleep when his roommate woke him up on Friday morning to tell him he had to leave immediately. He grabbed only his passport and wallet before heading to a friend’s home in a nearby city. Other residents have sought shelter at centers established by the city. Despite the clear danger, police chief Amir El-Farra reported that about 15% of the people living in the affected areas have refused to leave their homes, which has caused concern for local officials.

California Governor Gavin Newsom has officially declared a state of emergency to provide more resources for the response. GKN Aerospace released a statement saying that specialized hazardous material teams are on-site and working to assess the situation. The company emphasized that its main priority is the safety of its employees and the surrounding community. As of now, there have been no reports of injuries or deaths related to the leak.

As the situation continues, officials remain focused on cooling the tank and preventing a disaster. Chief Covey has urged all residents to take the evacuation orders seriously, noting that the team is doing everything possible to figure out how to stop the tank from failing. With the temperature still rising, the coming hours will be critical in determining whether the community can avoid a major explosion.
