Thousands Evacuate as California Chemical Tank Faces Crisis

Emergency crews in Southern California are working to stop a major chemical disaster after a storage tank began to fail at a manufacturing facility. The incident occurred at a GKN Aerospace site in the town of Garden Grove, located about 38 miles south of downtown Los Angeles. Authorities have ordered approximately 40,000 people to leave their homes in Garden Grove and five nearby cities, including Anaheim, Cypress, Stanton, Buena Park, and Westminster.

The problem began when a tank holding between 6,000 and 7,000 gallons of a chemical called methyl methacrylate started to overheat. This substance is highly flammable and is commonly used to make plastics and resins for aircraft parts. According to The Guardian, the tank began releasing vapors on Thursday. The situation became more difficult because of a broken valve, which prevented workers from fixing the leak quickly.

Orange County Fire Authority Division Chief Craig Covey explained the severity of the situation to reporters. He stated that the tank is in a state of crisis and is likely to fail. Officials are preparing for two possible outcomes: the tank could crack and spill thousands of gallons of toxic chemicals into the surrounding area, or it could undergo a "thermal runaway," a process where the chemical heats up rapidly and causes an explosion. If an explosion occurs, it could also damage other nearby tanks that contain fuel or more chemicals.

On Saturday, the situation became more concerning when officials discovered that the internal temperature of the tank was much higher than they originally thought. While drones had previously suggested the tank was cooling down, a direct reading of the tank’s gauge showed the temperature was actually rising. Chief Covey noted that the temperature was increasing by about one degree Fahrenheit every hour. Emergency teams are now spraying the tank with water to try to keep it stable and slow down the chemical reactions inside.

Dr. Regina Chinsio-Kwong, the county health officer, warned that the vapors released by the chemical are harmful to human health. Exposure can lead to respiratory issues, headaches, nausea, and burning eyes. She advised residents to watch for a "fruity and heavy smell" and to contact authorities if they notice it. However, she reassured those living outside the one-mile evacuation zone that they should be safe.

The impact on the local community has been significant. Many residents were told to leave their homes on short notice, often with very little time to prepare. Some people, like local resident Danny Pham, were surprised by the sudden order and had to leave behind their belongings to seek shelter in neighboring cities. According to The Guardian, police reported that about 15% of the people under the order were refusing to leave, despite the clear danger.

Local authorities have taken several steps to protect the public. They have set up shelters for those who have been displaced and have closed local schools. Additionally, crews have built sandbag barriers around the facility to prevent any spilled chemicals from reaching storm drains, local creeks, or the nearby ocean. While the facility is less than a mile from Disneyland’s theme parks, those areas remain open as they are outside the current evacuation zone.

GKN Aerospace, the company that owns the facility, stated that their main priority is the safety of their employees and the surrounding community. They are working with specialized hazardous material teams to manage the situation. California Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency to help coordinate the response efforts.

As of now, there have been no reports of injuries or deaths. Officials continue to urge residents to follow evacuation orders seriously, as the situation remains unpredictable. While crews are doing their best to prevent a failure, Chief Covey emphasized that they are dealing with a very dangerous and unstable tank. The community remains on alert as experts work to find a safe way to resolve the crisis.
