Large Cyclosporiasis Outbreak Raises Public Health Concerns

The United States is currently experiencing its largest outbreak of cyclosporiasis on record. Cyclosporiasis is a gastrointestinal illness caused by a tiny, single-celled parasite. As of late July, the number of suspected and confirmed cases has grown to more than 18,000. This situation has put public health departments across the country on high alert as they work to identify the source of the sickness and prevent further infections.

According to The Guardian Health, public health officials have successfully linked infections in nine states to iceberg lettuce produced by Taylor Farms in Mexico. The reach of this issue is significant, as the affected lettuce was sold in 27 states. Even in areas not officially considered part of the main outbreak, such as New Hampshire, health departments have identified cases linked to the same food source. For example, officials in New Hampshire found that people became sick after eating at a hospital cafeteria in Keene as recently as mid-July.

For those working on the frontlines of public health, this outbreak represents a difficult challenge. NPR Health reports that local investigators, such as those in Washtenaw County, Michigan, are managing this crisis while still recovering from other recent health emergencies, including a measles outbreak. These local teams are essential for gathering the information needed to track how the parasite spreads through communities.

There is some debate about whether the outbreak is finally starting to slow down. John Osiecki, a vice-president at the medical testing company bioMerieux, expressed hope that the situation is improving. His company creates a laboratory test that checks for 22 different stomach illnesses, including four types of parasites. Data from this test-maker showed that the rate of positive results for parasites reached a peak in mid-July at 15.6%. This is a notable increase compared to the same week in 2025, when the rate was only 2.9%.

However, experts caution that interpreting this data is complicated. While the total number of positive tests has declined, more people are choosing to get tested because of heightened public awareness. If many people take the test and receive negative results, it can lower the overall positivity rate even if the outbreak is still active. Furthermore, bioMerieux’s test is expensive, costing $417, and is often only covered by insurance for patients who have weakened immune systems. Additionally, these tests are more easily found in large cities than in rural areas, which may limit the data available to researchers.

Official data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is considered the most reliable, though it takes longer to process. The CDC has officially confirmed 6,707 cases of cyclosporiasis that were caught within the United States. At the same time, the agency is still working to confirm 11,500 additional cases by conducting interviews and reviewing health records. Because this process is thorough, the final numbers are expected to be more accurate than real-time testing data.

Some food safety researchers warn that the total number of sick people could be much higher than what is currently reported. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is currently investigating several other outbreaks that do not yet have a known cause. This suggests that the public health system is dealing with multiple, overlapping issues related to food safety.

Despite these concerns, there are signs that the public is taking the threat seriously. Many people are now more careful about what they eat, with some choosing to avoid lettuce entirely when dining out. As officials continue to monitor the situation, the focus remains on identifying contaminated products and ensuring that the public has clear information. While the peak of the outbreak may have passed, health experts emphasize that it is important to stay alert until the investigation is fully complete.
