Ukraine Faces Critical Air Defense Shortage After Deadly Kyiv Attack

A wave of Russian aerial attacks has struck Kyiv and its surrounding areas, leaving at least 17 people dead and dozens injured. The assault, which began just after midnight, was one of the most intense bombardments the capital has experienced in recent months. According to BBC News, workers at the Kvitneva railway station were seen clearing debris and recovering victims from the site, where personal items like shoes and glasses lay scattered across the pockmarked platform.

Ukrainian authorities reported that Russia launched 115 drones and 24 ballistic missiles during the two-hour attack. While Ukraine’s air defense systems were able to shoot down most of the drones, they failed to intercept a single ballistic missile. This failure has brought renewed attention to the country's critical shortage of Patriot interceptor missiles—the specialized weapons used to stop high-speed ballistic threats. The attack also caused a dangerous ammonia leak, which emergency crews were forced to manage while dealing with multiple fires across the city. Residents described a night of terror, with one witness telling the BBC that it was the scariest night she had experienced since the full-scale war began in February 2022. The destruction was so severe that some buildings were left with their upper floors completely sliced off.

International leaders have responded to the tragedy with strong words. Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, described the attack as another example of "horrible atrocities" committed by Russia. Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron called the policy of targeting civilians "unacceptable" and promised that the European Union would continue to strengthen military support for Ukraine. Despite these promises, the immediate reality on the ground remains grim for those living under the constant threat of bombardment.

As the conflict continues, Ukraine has begun to use its own long-range drones to strike targets inside Russia, such as oil refineries and warehouses belonging to major retailers. Kyiv hopes these actions will put enough pressure on the Russian government to force a change in strategy.
