Ebola Outbreak Grows Rapidly in Eastern Congo

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has reached a worrying new stage. One month after the government officially declared the start of the crisis, health officials reported one of the highest daily increases in cases. According to MedPage Today, authorities recorded 72 new cases in just 24 hours. This brings the total number of confirmed cases to 782, with 181 confirmed deaths. Experts warn that these numbers are likely an underestimate because many deaths in remote villages go unnoticed.

NPR Health reports that the city of Bunia, the capital of Ituri province, is currently the center of the outbreak. With over 200 cases, the city is struggling to manage the disease. Volunteers are going door to door to teach people how to stay safe, but they often face fear and resistance. In one recent incident in the city center, a man became sick on a public motorbike and died shortly after. This event highlighted the extreme difficulty health workers face when trying to track down everyone who might have been exposed to the virus.

Finding these "contacts"—people who have been near an infected person—is a critical step in stopping the spread of Ebola. However, the Congolese health ministry reports that they are currently only able to trace about 56% of these contacts. This is a sharp drop from previous weeks. MedPage Today notes that this decline is caused by several factors, including the rapid expansion of the virus into new areas and the fact that many people in the region move frequently. Conflict in the area has forced nearly a million people to leave their homes, making it very hard for medical teams to keep track of the population.

Medical workers are also dealing with severe shortages of supplies. At a hospital in Bunia, staff members have been working without enough personal protective equipment, or PPE—special gear like masks and gloves that protect doctors from catching the disease. While aid groups have sent hundreds of tons of medicine and equipment, it is still not enough to meet the high demand. Dr. Patient Mazirane, a hospital director, explained that the situation is putting an incredible amount of pressure on the local health system, which was already struggling due to a lack of funding.

Another challenge is the nature of the virus itself. MedPage Today reports that this outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo virus, a rare type of Ebola. Unlike the more common Zaire virus, there is currently no vaccine available for this specific type. This makes the response even more difficult, as medical teams must rely entirely on early detection and strict hygiene practices to stop the spread. Handwashing stations have become a common sight in Bunia, and officials are using public announcements to urge people not to panic.

Despite these massive hurdles, there are some efforts to improve the situation. Africa’s top health body is sending experts to help with laboratory testing and to support community efforts to find new cases. Kate White, an emergency coordinator for Doctors Without Borders, noted that the outbreak is currently moving faster than the response effort. She added that no one knows the true scale of the disease or exactly where it is spreading. As the crisis continues, international partners and donors are being asked to send more resources urgently to help save lives and stop the transmission of the virus.
