Ebola Outbreak Spreads to Sixth Province in DRC

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has reached a new, worrying stage. According to The Guardian World, the virus has now spread to a sixth province. This news comes just one day after health leaders warned that the current situation is on track to become the deadliest Ebola outbreak in history. More than a decade ago, a major epidemic killed at least 11,000 people, and experts fear this new wave could be even worse.

Latest government figures released on Tuesday show that the virus has already caused more than 2,100 deaths out of over 4,500 recorded cases. Jean Kaseya, the director general of Africa CDC, confirmed that a death was recorded in Bas-Uele province, an area that had previously been safe. The person had traveled from a town in Haut-Uele province to the capital of Bas-Uele, where he later died. This movement of people highlights the difficulty in stopping the virus from crossing borders between provinces.

The speed of this outbreak is particularly concerning. The death toll has been reached almost three times faster than during the 2014-16 outbreak in west Africa, which was previously the most dangerous on record. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director general of the World Health Organization, noted that based on the current pace, this outbreak will likely surpass that previous record. Currently, six of the DRC’s 26 provinces are affected, with the majority of cases located in Ituri province, where the virus was first identified.

Health officials are facing many challenges in their fight against the disease. The outbreak is happening at the same time as strikes by unpaid health workers, cuts to global aid, and threats from rebel groups. In some areas, there is also anger from local communities and misinformation claiming that Ebola is not real. For example, health workers at the Nizi treatment centre in Ituri recently went on strike because they had not been paid for three months, which forced the centre to close temporarily. Additionally, health authorities report that 60% to 70% of new cases are coming from outside of the groups being monitored, which suggests the virus is spreading at an alarming rate.

Dr. Mohamed Yakub Janabi, the regional director for Africa, described the difficult situation by saying that health teams are currently "chasing the virus" and that the virus is staying ahead of them. However, there is some hope for the future. Abdirahman Mahamud, the head of the emergency response division, suggested that if the response is managed well across all five transmission zones, there could be a turnaround in three months. Even with this positive outlook, he warned that the peak of the outbreak might not be reached for another six months, and the entire situation could last for up to a year.

Ebola is a rare but highly contagious disease. It spreads through contact with body fluids—such as blood, vomit, or semen—from infected people or their bodies after death. It can also spread through contaminated items like clothing or bedding. Because the current outbreak involves the Bundibugyo strain of the virus, there are no approved vaccines or treatments yet. However, clinical trials for two potential treatments began last month in Ituri. Furthermore, Tedros confirmed that two vaccines developed specifically for this strain are now being tested on people for the first time.

While the situation inside the DRC is severe, neighboring countries are also on alert. Uganda has reported 20 cases, all located in its capital, Kampala. Fortunately, the last case there was reported on June 21, and there has been no sign of the virus spreading within the community since then. As health teams continue their work, the true scope of the outbreak remains unknown. Although the outbreak was officially declared on May 15, recent data shows that it likely began months earlier in February. With the virus continuing to move into new areas, the coming months will be a critical test for international health efforts.
