Rising Fuel Costs Lead to Calls for U.S. Gas Tax Suspension

As the war between the United States and Iran enters its 11th week, American drivers are facing a difficult economic reality. The average price of regular gasoline has climbed to $4.52 per gallon, a sharp increase from the price of just under $3 per gallon seen before the conflict began. According to the American Automobile Association (AAA), this represents a rise of more than 50 percent. The higher costs are a direct result of blockades in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway where about one-fifth of the world’s crude oil usually travels. With these routes stalled, global oil prices have spiked.

In response to the growing financial pressure on families, President Donald Trump announced on Monday that he wants to temporarily suspend the federal gasoline tax. The current federal tax is 18.4 cents per gallon for gasoline and 24.4 cents for diesel. During an interview with CBS News, the president explained that he wants the tax removed for a period of time and reintroduced once gas prices go down. When reporters asked how long the suspension might last, President Trump said he would keep the tax off "till it's appropriate."

This move is a clear sign that the White House recognizes the toll that high energy costs are taking on the public. A recent poll by NPR, PBS News, and Marist found that eight out of ten Americans feel that gas prices are straining their budgets. The same poll showed that 63 percent of Americans blame the president for the current situation. While the president has expressed his support for the tax holiday, the White House does not have the power to change tax laws on its own. According to Al Jazeera, suspending a federal tax requires an act of the U.S. Congress.

Support for the idea is growing among some Republican lawmakers. Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri announced plans to introduce legislation to suspend the tax, and Representative Anna Paulina Luna of Florida stated on social media that she would work with the president to deliver this relief. Some Democrats, including Senators Mark Kelly and Richard Blumenthal, have also been calling for a pause on the tax for several weeks. Energy Secretary Chris Wright told NBC’s "Meet the Press" that the administration is "open to all ideas" to help lower energy prices.

However, the proposal faces challenges. The federal gas tax is an important source of money for the country’s infrastructure, generating about $2.5 billion that is used to maintain U.S. roads and highways. Because of this, some leaders remain skeptical. House Transportation and Infrastructure Chair Sam Graves has opposed the plan, and Senate Majority Leader John Thune has questioned whether the tax cut would be enough to significantly lower prices for the average driver. Senate Finance Chair Mike Crapo also noted that he was not currently considering the change.

Beyond the debate over taxes, the conflict continues to have a broad impact on the economy. Oil prices remain high as a ceasefire—an agreement to stop fighting—between the U.S. and Iran remains fragile. Rachel Ziemba, an expert at the Center for a New American Security, told Al Jazeera that the president’s move suggests he does not see a quick end to the current supply problems. She added that the impact of a tax suspension could be greater in states that have already chosen to reduce their own local gas taxes, such as Indiana, Kentucky, and Georgia.

While the government debates the tax, other sectors of the economy are also feeling the effects of the war. On Wall Street, stocks for major oil and gas companies like Exxon and Chevron have trended upward, reflecting the higher market prices for fuel. Meanwhile, the airline industry has also faced difficulties due to the rising costs of jet fuel. When asked about potential government help for airlines, President Trump told CBS News that no bailout had been presented and that the industry was currently managing the situation.

As Congress considers the legislation, the future of the gas tax remains uncertain. Whether the proposal will pass and how much relief it will truly provide to families are questions that remain unanswered. For now, the administration continues to monitor the situation in the Middle East, while American consumers wait to see if the government will take action to ease the burden at the pump.
