A group of progressive thinkers is suggesting that the answer to the cost-of-living crisis might be found in climate policy. A new report from the Climate and Community Institute (CCI) argues that the climate crisis is a major cause of economic instability. Instead of viewing environmental goals as a burden, the group suggests that moving toward green energy can be a tool to make life more affordable for working people.

This idea, which the CCI calls “green economic populism,” aims to challenge the belief that climate action makes life more expensive. According to The Guardian, the group recently shared data showing that a large majority of voters—including 65% of Republicans—believe that taking action on climate change could help lower the cost of living. Patrick Bigger, a research director at the CCI, stated that the government has failed to invest enough in working people over the last few decades, leading to the pain families feel today. The group hopes to work with unions and social movements to create policies that focus on economic fairness rather than just the profits of large corporations.

This approach is not entirely new. It builds on the framework of the Green New Deal, which was popularized in 2018. That movement sought to connect the need for a cleaner environment with the need for better jobs, housing, and healthcare. Supporters believe that by changing the way the economy is built, the country can solve both the climate crisis and the cost-of-living crisis at the same time. Naomi Klein, a prominent author and member of the CCI advisory board, noted that this strategy is designed to prove that reducing emissions does not have to make life harder for the average person.

As the country looks toward the future, the debate over how to handle these rising costs continues. Whether through immediate changes in the travel industry or long-term shifts in energy policy, it is clear that the economy is in a period of transition.
