Large Drone Attacks Increase Tensions Between Ukraine and Russia

The conflict between Ukraine and Russia has reached a new level of intensity following a massive exchange of aerial attacks. Over the past weekend, Ukraine launched hundreds of drones deep into Russian territory. According to NPR News, this event marks one of the largest aerial operations conducted by Kyiv since the full-scale invasion began nearly four and a half years ago.

Russian officials provided details on the scale of the operation. The Russian Ministry of Defense stated that they destroyed 822 Ukrainian drones during the night. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported that approximately 600 of these drones were directed toward the Russian capital. While many were intercepted, the impact on the ground was significant. In the Moscow region, a drone strike on a private home resulted in the death of an 83-year-old man, as confirmed by local Governor Andrey Vorobyov. Additionally, a major warehouse belonging to the Russian retail company Wildberries was set on fire in the town of Podolsk, with images showing thick black smoke rising from the site.

Further south, the situation was equally dangerous. In the Rostov region, local Governor Yury Slyusar reported that a wave of over 150 drones targeted three different towns. This attack caused the deaths of five people, damaged local homes, and destroyed a railway station. The strikes also caused a large forest fire, adding to the destruction in the area. Ukraine has been increasingly using long-range missiles and large groups of drones to target Russian military industries, energy facilities, and major supply centers like the Wildberries depots, which has caused billions of dollars in losses.

At the same time, Russia continued its own military actions inside Ukraine. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that a Russian missile attack on the city of Kryvyi Rih killed two people and left 14 others wounded. Another person was killed in the city of Sumy. Furthermore, an attack on the capital city of Kyiv caused several fires and left six people injured. President Zelenskyy criticized these actions, stating that Russia continues to target civilian infrastructure—the basic systems like power and water that people need to live—whenever their ballistic missiles can reach them.

This cycle of attacks highlights how the war has changed over the last year. Ukraine has moved to bring the reality of the conflict directly to the Russian public, moving beyond the front lines of the battlefield. By targeting industrial and economic centers, Ukraine aims to disrupt the Russian war effort.
