Conflict in Yemen Grows as Houthis Take Control of Key Shipping Route

The conflict in Yemen has reached a new and dangerous stage. Houthi forces, who are backed by Iran, have claimed a major military victory along the western coast of the country. According to BBC News, the group has taken control of Perim Island, which sits at the mouth of the Bab al-Mandab Strait. This narrow waterway is one of the most important shipping routes in the world, connecting Asia to Europe through the Red Sea and the Suez Canal. The Guardian reports that about 12% of the world’s goods usually pass through this area.

This development follows the Houthi capture of the port city of Mocha. Military sources told the BBC that the Houthis now control the entire coastline in that region. The Houthi military spokesman, Yahya Sarea, stated that their operation was a success and was launched in response to what he called the "blatant aggression" of Saudi Arabia. The group also claimed to have pushed Saudi-backed forces out of six districts in the Taiz and Hodeidah regions, resulting in hundreds of casualties among the opposing troops. Furthermore, approximately 46,000 people have been forced to leave their homes to find safety. As the violence continues, there is growing fear among Western nations that even the city of Aden, where the internationally-recognized government is based, could eventually fall to the Houthis.

In response to these events, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has reportedly asked United States President Donald Trump to take military action against the Houthis. However, sources familiar with the matter told CBS News—a partner of the BBC—that President Trump has so far decided against direct US military involvement. Instead, the US has offered to assist with intelligence and targeting support. British diplomatic sources also confirmed that they do not expect the US to launch bombing missions against Houthi positions at this time.

The situation is further complicated by the broader regional struggle between Iran and its neighbors. Iran has publicly supported the Houthi advances, marking its first major comment on the recent fighting. Meanwhile, there are reports that drones from Iraq have targeted a major oil pipeline in Saudi Arabia, forcing the country to close it as a safety measure. The Iraqi government has condemned this attack and launched an investigation.

Looking ahead, the future of the region remains uncertain. Foreign ministers from the Gulf Cooperation Council are expected to meet in Oman to discuss potential agreements regarding shipping routes.
