New Wave of Attacks Hits Ukraine as Conflict Intensifies

A series of intense attacks has shaken Ukraine, leading to a high number of casualties and renewed concerns about the safety of civilians. According to BBC News, a Russian drone strike hit a large shopping center in the city of Kryvyi Rih. Local officials described the attack as a "double-tap" strike, meaning a second drone hit the same location shortly after the first. This tactic is particularly dangerous because it often targets emergency workers and survivors who arrive at the scene to help.

BBC News reports that at least 15 people have died as a result of the strike in Kryvyi Rih. Among the victims were individuals who passed away later in the hospital. The attack also left 130 people injured, including 23 children. The strike in Kryvyi Rih is part of a wider wave of violence across the country. According to BBC News, separate Russian attacks in the southern Mykolaiv region resulted in the deaths of four people, including three children. Additionally, two people were killed in the north-eastern Kharkiv region, and three others were injured in the city of Zaporizhzhia when a drone exploded near a taxi. These events follow a major attack on the capital, Kyiv, just one day earlier, where 17 people were killed and over 40 were injured. That attack caused damage to homes, a children's hospital, and a school.

While Russia continues its campaign, Ukraine has also increased its efforts to strike targets inside Russia. BBC News reports that the Ukrainian military recently carried out attacks on an oil refinery and a military airfield deep within Russian territory. Kyiv maintains that these are legitimate targets because they provide the resources and infrastructure that help Russia fund and support its ongoing war efforts. In recent months, Ukraine has also targeted warehouses belonging to major Russian companies.

The war, which began with a full-scale invasion by Russian President Vladimir Putin in February 2022, has caused immense suffering.
