A New Chapter: EU Unblocks Funds for Hungary After Change in Leadership

The European Union (EU) has announced that it will release more than €16 billion in funds to Hungary. These funds had been frozen for a long time during the leadership of former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. The decision follows the election of a new leader, Péter Magyar, who won a landslide victory last month. One of the most visible signs of change is the status of the annual Pride parade in Budapest. Last year, the government under Viktor Orbán tried to stop the event. His party had even backed laws that created a legal way to ban such gatherings, claiming they needed to protect children. However, the police have now confirmed that the 31st edition of the Budapest Pride march will go ahead on 27 June. The police stated that they found no legal reason to stop the event after talking with the organizers. This decision follows a ruling by the European Court of Justice, which found that the previous anti-LGBTQ+ laws were unfair and broke the rules of the European Union.

Despite this progress, not all the money is being released immediately. The Guardian reports that about €2.2 billion is tied to the requirement that Hungary must restore "academic freedom" in its universities. Additionally, another €500 million will be held back until the country fully complies with the recent court ruling regarding laws that discriminate against the LGBTQ+ community. This shows that while the EU is happy with the new leadership, it still expects Hungary to follow through on its promises to protect the rights of all citizens.
