Europe Faces Deadly Heatwave Crisis as Temperatures Move East

A dangerous heatwave is moving across central and eastern Europe, bringing record-breaking temperatures to a new part of the continent. After causing significant loss of life in western Europe, the "heat dome"—a high-pressure system that traps hot air like a lid on a pot—has shifted east. According to The Guardian, cities including Budapest, Belgrade, and Bucharest are seeing temperatures reach levels that are both rare and dangerous.

In Hungary, authorities have issued red warnings for extreme heat. The country’s prime minister, Péter Magyar, used social media to call for national unity, asking citizens to look out for one another during these difficult days. To help those without air conditioning at home, the government has opened more than 2,000 cooling centers across the country. Additionally, the Paks nuclear power plant received special permission to manage its cooling water rules to ensure that electricity production does not drop during this critical time.

Other nations are also feeling the pressure. Slovakia recently set a new national temperature record of 40.5C, breaking a mark that had stood since 2007. In Germany, transport systems have faced disruptions as extreme heat caused metal tram tracks to bend. Meanwhile, in Croatia, firefighters are working hard to stop a wildfire on the island of Vis, using aircraft to help protect the area from the flames.

While the heat is currently moving east, western Europe is beginning to count the human cost of the event. In France, public health officials reported that the heatwave contributed to more than 1,000 excess deaths—a term used to describe deaths that are higher than the usual number expected for that time of year. Spain has also recorded more than 800 additional deaths nationwide. The situation in Paris has become particularly difficult for funeral services. According to MedPage Today, mortuaries in the city have run out of space, leaving families in distress as they struggle to find places to store their loved ones. One mortuary owner, Zouhaier Hertelli, described the situation as "catastrophic," noting that he has had to turn away many families because his cold rooms are completely full.

Public Health France noted that the death rate in the country spiked significantly during the hottest days of the week. Data shows that 85% of those who died were aged 65 or older, with a 40% increase in deaths occurring at home. Because many of these records are still kept on paper rather than electronically, officials believe the final number of deaths will likely be higher than current estimates. To manage the overflow, Paris city officials have installed temporary storage units and are using hospital space to help funeral directors.

Beyond the heat, the extreme weather has also brought violent storms to other parts of the continent. In Italy’s Alto Adige region, heavy rain led to flash floods and landslides. Firefighters were forced to rescue people from their homes and garages after rivers rose quickly and burst their banks. These events serve as a reminder that the current weather patterns are causing a wide range of problems, from fires and floods to record-breaking heat.

Scientists have stated that this heatwave, which is the most severe and widespread in history, is only possible because of the climate crisis driven by the burning of fossil fuels like coal, oil, and gas. For many citizens, the experience is a wake-up call. Susanne, a resident of Vienna, told AFP that she hopes politicians will finally understand the urgency of the situation and begin to set a course in the right direction to protect the environment.

As the heat continues to affect millions, authorities across the region are urging people to stay indoors during the hottest hours of the day and to drink plenty of water. While the worst of the heat has started to ease in some western areas, the coming days remain critical for countries in the east. The combination of record temperatures and the tragic loss of life has left many across Europe asking what can be done to prepare for such events in the future.
