FDA Panel Recommends Easier Access to Popular Peptides

A group of experts advising the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently voted to recommend that the government allow specialized pharmacies to produce two popular health compounds. These substances, known as peptides, are strings of amino acids—the building blocks of proteins—that help the body perform important tasks. She argued that the real choice is not whether people will use these drugs, but whether they will use them under the care of a doctor or on their own.

Because these specific peptides have not undergone the same rigorous testing as other approved drugs, the government has been cautious about allowing their widespread use. The FDA's own experts argued during the meeting that the current restrictions should remain in place to protect the public from unknown risks.
