Deadly Flash Floods Hit Nepal and Tibet Border

A major natural disaster has struck the Himalayan border between Nepal and Tibet, leaving at least 157 people dead and hundreds missing. The event, which involved a massive wave of mud, water, and debris, has destroyed homes, roads, and bridges. According to The Guardian, the disaster has affected many local residents as well as foreign tourists from countries including India, the UK, the US, Australia, South Korea, and Malaysia.

Authorities are still working to find out exactly what happened. The US Geological Survey reported a magnitude-4.4 earthquake in Nepal early Wednesday near the border. Experts believe this earthquake caused a large piece of ice to break off from a glacier. This ice crashed into a mountain valley, causing a sudden and dangerous surge of water down the Lhende Khola River. This river is a branch of the larger Bhote Koshi River, which flows through the region.

In Nepal, the situation is critical. Officials reported that 403 people are missing in the country. Many of these individuals were religious tourists on a trip to Mount Kailash, a sacred site in Tibet. Others were locals trekking in the Rasuwa district, which is one of the areas hit hardest by the flood. Tula Bahadur BK, a health worker in Rasuwa, described the scene as total destruction. He noted that settlements near the river were completely washed away, and he confirmed that five of his own relatives are among the missing.

Across the border in Tibet, the impact is also severe. China’s state broadcaster reported that at least three people have died and 265 are missing. The official Xinhua news agency stated that the flood cut off roads, communication lines, and power supplies in the Shigatse region. On the Nepali side, the energy ministry reported that the country’s electricity supply has been significantly damaged. This is mostly because several hydroelectric plants—facilities that use flowing water to create electricity—were destroyed by the floodwaters.

Rescue operations are currently facing major challenges. Police in Nepal explained that they cannot yet see the full scale of the damage because the water levels are still too high. Rescuers have been unable to land helicopters in the mountainous areas of Syapru Besi and Timure because of the dangerous conditions. Furthermore, heavy monsoon rains are making the rescue work much slower and more difficult. The district administrator, Narendra Pariyar, has urged everyone living near the rivers to move to higher ground immediately to stay safe.

Governments in the area are now coordinating their responses. Nepal’s Prime Minister, Balendra Shah, has ordered police and military officers to help move people from low-lying areas to safer locations. He has also asked people living along the rivers to stay alert and exercise extra caution. Meanwhile, the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has spoken with Prime Minister Shah and offered all possible humanitarian assistance—help provided to people in need after a disaster—to support the rescue and recovery efforts.

Looking ahead, officials are worried that the situation could get worse. Parts of the river remain blocked by large ice rocks and other debris. If these blockages suddenly break, it could cause another wave of water to rush downstream. Because of this risk, authorities have issued flood alerts for the Indian states of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, which are located downstream from the affected rivers. As the water slowly recedes, the focus will remain on finding those who are missing and restoring essential services like electricity and communication to the region.
