Ebola Outbreak in DR Congo Becomes Second-Largest in History

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is currently facing a major health crisis as its latest Ebola outbreak has become the second-largest ever recorded. According to Deutsche Welle (DW) Top, the number of confirmed cases has now surpassed the total seen during the country’s previous deadliest epidemic, which occurred between 2018 and 2020. Officials reported that there are now 3,532 confirmed cases and 1,556 deaths across five different provinces.

This outbreak is moving at an alarming speed. The Guardian World reports that it is the fastest-growing Ebola epidemic in the history of the virus. Experts from the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention noted that the virus has been unusually deadly, killing five times more people in its first three months than previous outbreaks did during the same period. The disease is caused by the Bundibugyo strain, a specific type of the virus for which there is currently no standard treatment or approved vaccine.

Health officials are finding it very difficult to control the spread of the disease. Prof Pierre Akilimali, who leads the Ebola response for the country’s public health institute, explained that the situation is complicated by local insecurity, mining activities, and high population density. In many areas, conflict makes it hard for medical teams to reach those who are sick. Residents in affected regions, such as Ituri, have expressed deep fear, noting that their daily lives and local development projects have come to a standstill because of the constant threat of infection.

According to The Guardian World, the outbreak was officially declared on 15 May. Since then, cases have risen rapidly, with between 100 and 150 new infections confirmed each week in the Bunia and Rwampara health zones. Dr. Justus Nsio, a field manager for the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, stated that the virus was detected too late. He emphasized that health teams are now in a difficult race against time to catch up and contain the disease.

To fight the virus, authorities have built more than 20 treatment centers and set up local laboratories for testing. They are also using community workers to help track the spread of the virus. Despite these efforts, the situation remains unstable. Deutsche Welle (DW) Top reports that the virus has spread into regions like North Kivu and South Kivu, where large areas are controlled by the M23 rebel group. This ongoing conflict makes it even harder for health workers to move safely and provide care.

There is, however, some hope regarding new medical research. Because there is no existing treatment for the Bundibugyo strain, scientists are working on experimental vaccines. The Guardian World reports that clinical trials for one vaccine began in early July, with about 20 people enrolled as of mid-July. Deutsche Welle (DW) Top added that another vaccine candidate is being developed by the University of Oxford, and the first volunteer recently received a dose as part of a new trial. While these developments are promising, experts caution that the research process could take several months.

As the crisis continues, international cooperation is playing a role in the response. Uganda, which recently declared its own Ebola outbreak over, has sent experts to the DRC to assist in border regions like Tchomia and Kasenyi. Meanwhile, officials continue to urge the public to seek medical advice at the first sign of symptoms. As Prof Akilimali noted, the road to bringing the outbreak under control is a long one, and the success of these efforts depends on the commitment of both local authorities and international partners.
