Health Officials Monitor Hantavirus Outbreak on Cruise Ship

A cruise ship currently traveling across the Atlantic Ocean is facing a serious health situation after an outbreak of a virus known as hantavirus. The ship, called the MV Hondius, was on a journey from Argentina to Cape Verde when the illness was discovered. According to BBC Health, the ship is expected to reach the Canary Islands by the weekend, where authorities will continue to manage the situation.

Health officials have confirmed that three people have died, and several others are ill. NPR reports that about eight people in total have been affected by the virus. One patient remains in intensive care in South Africa, while another is hospitalized in Zurich. The ship’s doctor also became seriously ill and required transportation by plane to the Canary Islands. Everyone else on board is being closely monitored for symptoms, and testing is ongoing.

To understand this situation, it is helpful to know what hantavirus is. According to BBC Health, hantaviruses are a family of viruses usually carried by rodents like rats and mice. People typically catch the virus by breathing in dust that contains the animals' dried urine or droppings. In severe cases, this can lead to dangerous breathing problems and heart failure.

What makes this specific outbreak unusual is the type of virus involved. While most hantaviruses do not spread between people, the "Andes strain" identified on the ship is known to be different. BBC Health notes that this strain can spread from person to person, though this is very rare. Dr. Gounder explained to NPR that this kind of transmission requires very close, long-term contact, such as between a husband and wife. It is not like the flu or COVID-19, which can spread more easily through casual contact in a room.

It is not yet clear how the virus first arrived on the ship. BBC Health reports that the cruise visited remote wildlife areas, meaning passengers might have come into contact with the virus during their travels. A Dutch couple who passed away had traveled in South America before boarding the ship in early April, and it is possible they were exposed during that time. In response to the outbreak, the ship’s crew has taken strict safety measures. Passengers are currently confined to their cabins to limit exposure to others. Experts say that isolating infected patients, washing hands frequently, and tracing people who have been in close contact with the sick are the most important steps to stop the virus. Because there are no specific medicines to cure hantavirus, doctors must provide "supportive care." This means using machines to help patients breathe or to support their heart and lungs while their bodies fight the infection.

Despite the seriousness of the situation on the ship, health experts are working to calm fears about the rest of the world.
