Hundreds Charged in Massive Healthcare Fraud Investigation

The United States Justice Department recently announced a major crackdown on healthcare fraud, leading to criminal charges against 455 individuals. This group includes 90 doctors and other medical professionals. In another case, a mental health company owner is accused of taking advantage of homeless people by billing for crisis services they did not actually need. Other allegations include a hospice owner who reportedly paid kickbacks—illegal payments made to someone in exchange for a favor or business—to a funeral home employee to get information about Medicare patients.

One of the most serious cases involves a cardiologist named Jason Finkelstein. According to MedPage Today, Finkelstein is charged in Florida for his role in an $89 million fraud scheme. Prosecutors say he offered free heart screening tests to college student-athletes who did not need them. He then allegedly signed off on the results as normal without even reviewing them. The indictment claims that Finkelstein’s actions preyed on the fears of young athletes who were worried about sudden heart problems. In one tragic instance, a patient whose results were falsely cleared as healthy later died after his serious heart issues went undetected.

Prosecutors say the scheme was highly organized. The indictment quotes Finkelstein speaking to a partner about the risks of their actions, showing he understood that the students could be in danger. Finkelstein has pleaded not guilty to the charges. His lawyer did not provide a comment when asked by reporters. The government claims the fraud occurred between 2019 and the end of last year, involving Finkelstein and two other people at his cardiovascular practice.
