Extreme Heat Turns Hospital Wards into Dangerous Environments

As record-breaking heatwaves continue to sweep across England, hospitals are facing a growing crisis that threatens both patient care and staff safety. Recent data shows that many medical facilities have become dangerously hot, with some wards reaching temperatures far above the recommended safety limits. This situation has forced hospitals to cancel planned surgeries and rethink how they provide care during the hottest parts of the day.

According to The Guardian Health, figures from 33 NHS trusts—the organizations that manage local hospital services—reveal that temperatures on wards reached an average of 31.9C in July. This is significantly higher than the 28C limit recommended by NHS England to ensure the safety of everyone inside. In one extreme case, the Northern Care Alliance NHS foundation trust recorded a temperature of 41.8C, which is 14C higher than the suggested maximum. These high temperatures are not just uncomfortable; they are creating hostile environments for those who are already sick or vulnerable.

The intense heat is causing serious technical problems for hospitals. Many operating theatres, which are often located on the roofs of buildings, rely on cooling units to maintain a safe environment. However, these systems are failing because they cannot handle the extreme external heat. As a result, hospitals have been forced to cancel or reschedule surgeries. The NHS Alliance noted that while it is difficult to know exactly how many of the 205 NHS trusts have had to stop their operating lists, the impact is widespread. Some patients are also choosing to cancel their own appointments because the heat makes it too difficult for them to travel to the hospital.

Healthcare workers are also struggling to cope with these conditions. There is growing concern that nurses are fainting due to the heat, and many staff members are working in buildings that are simply too old to manage such high temperatures. To help, some ambulance services have changed their dress codes, allowing crews to wear shorts instead of trousers. Additionally, ambulance teams are facing challenges keeping medications at the correct temperature inside their vehicles. Some hospitals have tried to solve these problems by renting hundreds of temporary air conditioning units, but this is only a short-term fix for a much larger issue.

The Liberal Democrats have called on the government to take immediate action. They are proposing the creation of a new “NHS rapid adaptation unit.” This team would be responsible for “heatproofing” hospitals and care homes by installing permanent cooling systems and upgrading old buildings to make them better able to handle future heatwaves. Helen Morgan, the party’s health spokesperson, stated that the government must make all care homes and hospitals fit for the future, as the current state of these buildings is unacceptable.

Experts point to a long-term lack of investment as the root cause of the problem. David Williams, the deputy director of policy at the NHS Alliance, explained that years of underfunding have left the health service with crumbling buildings and outdated equipment that cannot handle modern climate challenges. He noted that the temperatures recorded this summer show that this has become an urgent issue that affects the health and wellbeing of both patients and staff.

In the meantime, hospitals are adapting their daily routines to protect the most vulnerable. Many GP surgeries and hospitals are now scheduling appointments for elderly patients only at the very start or the very end of the day, when the air is cooler. While these measures help, they do not solve the fundamental problem of buildings that are not designed for the rising temperatures seen this summer. As the climate continues to change, the pressure on the NHS to modernize its estate—the collection of buildings and land it owns—will only increase. Without significant upgrades, the safety of patients and the ability of staff to provide care will remain at risk during every future heatwave.
