Iran Prepares for Massive Funeral Following Death of Supreme Leader

Tehran is preparing for a series of large funeral ceremonies for the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The 86-year-old cleric died following a recent war, leaving the country in a state of deep mourning. According to NPR News, the government expects millions of people to flood the streets of the capital starting Saturday. These events are expected to be similar to the massive funeral held for the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini in 1989.

As the nation prepares for these events, foreign dignitaries have begun to arrive in Iran. Deutsche Welle reports that representatives from countries including China, Belarus, Iraq, Turkmenistan, and India have landed in Tehran. Other notable figures, such as Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi, were also seen paying their respects. The presence of these international officials is viewed as a way for Iran to demonstrate strength and political stability during a time of crisis.

Khamenei’s coffin is currently resting at the Grand Mosalla Mosque in Tehran. It is draped in a red flag that features white calligraphy. This flag was previously flown over the Imam Hussein shrine in Iraq. According to NPR News, this flag symbolizes both the blood of someone killed unjustly and a call for justice or revenge. The coffin is being displayed alongside the bodies of family members who were killed in an Israeli airstrike at the start of the war on February 28. These family members include his eldest daughter, a son-in-law, a young granddaughter, and the wife of the new Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei. Reports indicate that the new leader remains in hiding after being wounded during that same attack.

In a notable development, a high-ranking general from Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, Ahmad Vahidi, appeared in public for the first time in months. NPR News and Deutsche Welle both noted that his appearance at a funeral service was significant. General Vahidi is a key figure in Iran's tough negotiations with the United States to end the ongoing war. His return to the public eye is seen by many as a sign that the government is trying to project unity and control.

Government officials, including President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, have already paid their respects at the mosque. Supporters of the government believe that the funeral will reinforce the nation's independence. "As long as these people, who are chosen by God, are on the field, we will definitely continue the same policy of not accepting humiliation," said Mohammad Hossein Rezaei, a volunteer helping with the funeral preparations, as quoted by NPR News.

The funeral events are scheduled to last until Monday, with the coffin being moved to several different cities. After being displayed in Tehran, it will be taken to the holy city of Qom and then to Iraq. Finally, the burial will take place in the leader's hometown of Mashhad on Thursday. To ensure security during these days of mourning, the government has announced that airspace will be closed and many streets will be blocked in the cities where the ceremonies will occur.

This period of mourning comes at a delicate time for Iran. The country is currently involved in difficult negotiations with the United States to reach a permanent end to the war.
