Marine Le Pen Announces 2027 Presidential Bid Despite Legal Conviction

Marine Le Pen, the leader of France’s National Rally (RN) party, has announced that she will run for president in the 2027 election. This decision comes after a Paris court of appeal confirmed her conviction for misusing 2.8 million euros in European Union funds. The court found that Le Pen and other party members used this money to pay for party staff between 2004 and 2016, a scheme described as a fake-jobs scam.

According to BBC News, the court sentenced Le Pen to a three-year prison term, with two years suspended. For the remaining year, she was ordered to wear an electronic ankle tag, a device used to monitor her location and restrict when she can leave her home. However, Le Pen has decided to challenge this ruling by taking her case to the Court of Cassation, which is France’s highest civil court.

By filing this appeal, Le Pen has effectively put her sentence on hold. She told TF1 television that this legal action means she will not have to wear the electronic tag while she campaigns for the presidency. "I consider us innocent of the things we are accused of," she stated during the interview. The Guardian reports that the Court of Cassation will likely take several months to reach a decision, which creates a window of time for her to campaign freely before the election, which is scheduled for April and May 2027.

This announcement ends months of uncertainty regarding whether Le Pen would step aside. Many observers had wondered if she would hand the candidacy to Jordan Bardella, the 30-year-old president of her party. Instead, Le Pen has proposed a partnership. She explained that if she is elected president, she and Bardella would work together, with him serving as her prime minister. She described their relationship as a "solid partnership" where they complement each other’s strengths.

Not everyone supports her decision to run. Political opponents have criticized her heavily following the court's verdict. According to The Guardian, Manon Aubry of the La France Insoumise party called the National Rally a "party of thieves and liars." Additionally, Socialist party leader Olivier Faure argued that political candidates should be "exemplary" and suggested that Le Pen should not seek office given her conviction.

The legal situation remains complex. While the appeals court reduced the original ban that prevented Le Pen from holding public office, public prosecutors have stated they also plan to appeal the court’s decision to reduce her sentence. Deutsche Welle noted that the court’s ruling on the appeal is not expected until at least early 2027. If the highest court confirms the original verdict, Le Pen could still be required to wear the electronic tag during the most important part of her campaign, which could create a significant challenge for her image.

This will be Le Pen’s fourth attempt to win the French presidency. She previously reached the final round of voting in both 2017 and 2022, losing to Emmanuel Macron both times. Her supporters see her as a strong leader who can bring about a "rebirth of France," while her critics point to the court's findings as evidence of corruption.
