Meta Cuts Thousands of Jobs to Focus on Artificial Intelligence

Meta, the company that owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, has started a large reorganization. This change will shrink its workforce and shift the company’s focus toward artificial intelligence (AI) — computer systems that can perform tasks that usually require human intelligence. According to NPR, Meta will lay off about 10 percent of its workers, which equals approximately 8,000 people. Company spokesperson Erica Sackin confirmed that these employees have already been notified.

For the employees who are leaving the company, Meta has offered severance pay. Al Jazeera reports that workers in the United States will receive 16 weeks of pay, plus an extra two weeks for every year they have worked at the company.
