By July 6, the total count had surpassed 700, with 36 people requiring hospital care. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the infection typically causes watery diarrhea and frequent, sometimes explosive, bowel movements. Most people recover after about a week, but for some, the symptoms can last for two weeks or longer.

In the past, similar outbreaks have been linked to common grocery items like bagged salad mixes, cilantro, basil, raspberries, snow peas, and green onions.
