New Daily Diabetes Pill for Weight Loss Launches in UK Pharmacies

A new daily pill designed to treat type 2 diabetes and assist with weight loss has officially arrived in UK pharmacies. The drug, known as Foundayo and produced by the US pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly, received approval from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) earlier this month. This launch marks a significant moment, as the UK is the first country in Europe to make this specific oral treatment available to patients.

According to The Guardian Health, the medication is intended for individuals who meet specific health criteria. It is licensed for those with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher, or for people with a BMI between 27 and 30 who also suffer from at least one weight-related health condition. Additionally, the pill can be used to help patients manage their blood sugar levels if they have type 2 diabetes that is not well-controlled. One of the main advantages of this treatment is that it is taken once a day, and patients do not need to follow any special rules regarding food or water intake.

Khalil Asmar, the vice-president of cardiometabolic health at Lilly Northern Europe, expressed satisfaction with the launch. He noted that this provides another oral treatment option for eligible patients alongside existing injectable medicines. Currently, the drug is available through private prescriptions. The company is also working with the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (Nice) to see if the pill can eventually be provided through the National Health Service (NHS) in England.

For many patients, the arrival of a pill is a welcome change. Henry Gregg, the chief executive of the National Pharmacy Association, explained that this is a significant development for those who cannot use or simply do not want to use injectable medicines. By offering a pill, doctors may be able to provide weight-loss support to a much wider range of patients who were previously unable to access such treatments.

Despite the excitement surrounding the new medication, there are serious concerns about safety. Experts are warning the public about the growing problem of fake, unlicensed, or counterfeit drugs. Counterfeit drugs are fake medicines that are made to look like real ones but may contain dangerous or ineffective ingredients. Because pills are often easier to produce than injectable pens, they are a common target for illegal sellers. The MHRA has already taken action against this illegal market, including seizing a large amount of unlicensed weight-loss products from a factory in Northampton last year. Furthermore, Eli Lilly is currently taking legal action against various suppliers accused of running an illegal hidden market for its products.

Because of these risks, health officials are urging patients to be extremely careful. They advise that people should only access weight-loss treatments through safe, regulated, and official pharmacies. Buying medication from unauthorized websites or social media sellers can put a patient’s health at serious risk, as there is no way to know if the product is safe or if it contains the correct medicine.

Looking ahead, there is a push to change how these treatments are distributed. Currently, many patients face what is known as a "postcode lottery" when trying to access weight management services through their local doctors. This means that a person's ability to get treatment depends heavily on where they live, rather than their medical needs. Henry Gregg of the National Pharmacy Association argued that there must be a stronger effort from the government and the NHS to use pharmacies to help more patients. He believes that by using pharmacies, the system could ensure that those who are in clinical need can get the help they require more easily.

This launch follows the approval of another GLP-1 pill for weight loss in June. GLP-1 is a type of medicine that mimics a hormone in the body to help control appetite and blood sugar. As more of these options become available, the focus for health authorities will remain on balancing the need for wider access with the critical need to protect patients from the dangers of the illegal drug market.
