New Rapid Tests Offer Hope for Faster Endometriosis Diagnosis

For millions of women, the journey to a medical diagnosis can be long and painful. Endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to the lining of the womb grows in other parts of the body, such as the ovaries. It affects one in 10 women of reproductive age, often causing severe pain, heavy periods, and fertility issues. According to The Guardian, the average time to receive a diagnosis in the UK is over nine years. For some, this wait can last even longer, leading to years of suffering, missed work, and damaged mental health.

Currently, the main way to confirm the disease on the NHS is through a surgical procedure called a laparoscopy, which requires a general anaesthetic. Because symptoms of endometriosis often overlap with other conditions like irritable bowel syndrome, many women are misdiagnosed or told their pain is not serious. Ami Robertson, a 23-year-old from Glasgow, told the BBC that she experienced symptoms from age 16 but was repeatedly told she had other issues. "I started to doubt myself, wondering if it was all in my head," she said. "No one should have to wait years to be believed."

To address these long delays, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has released new draft guidance for the NHS in England and Wales. This guidance recommends two new non-invasive tests that GPs can offer to patients. The first, called Endotest, uses a saliva sample to look for specific genetic material. The second, known as Endosure, uses sensor pads on the abdomen to measure electrical signals in the gut. During this 45-minute test, patients must fast for several hours before drinking water to help the device record gut activity accurately.

These tests are not meant to replace all other medical checks. Instead, they are designed to be used when a standard clinical exam and imaging results, such as ultrasound scans, do not provide a clear answer. Dr. Anastasia Chalkidou, a director at NICE, noted that these technologies have the potential to change the current situation by giving doctors better tools to identify the condition earlier. This allows for faster treatment and helps prevent the disease from getting worse over time.

While these new tests are a significant step forward, they are not yet available everywhere. The NHS will continue to collect information on how well the tests work over the next three years before making a final decision on permanent use. Emma Cox, chief executive of the charity Endometriosis UK, welcomed the news but emphasized that the technology must be supported by better education for healthcare staff. She noted that availability of these tests must go hand-in-hand with training for GPs and practice nurses to ensure that patients can actually access them.

Beyond these two tests, other research is exploring different ways to simplify the diagnostic process. A study from the University of Edinburgh recently suggested that a blood test could one day identify endometriosis by looking for differences in hormone levels. Researchers found that women with the condition often had a distinct "hormone fingerprint," including higher levels of certain androgens, which are hormones often associated with men. While this research is still in the early stages and requires testing on a larger group of people, it offers a promising look at the future of women's health.

For patients like Simran, whose mother Sharan Uppal spent years seeking help, these developments cannot come soon enough. After paying privately for a gut test that came back positive, Sharan was finally able to push for the referral her daughter needed. She described the test as a way to open doors that had previously been closed. As the NHS begins to roll out these new options, the hope is that the era of waiting a decade for answers will soon come to an end, allowing women to receive the care they need much earlier in their lives.
