New Study Reveals High Rates of Brain Disease in Former NFL Players

A major new study has provided a clearer picture of how often former professional football players suffer from a serious brain disease. According to research published in the medical journal The BMJ, at least 25% of former National Football League (NFL) players who died between 2016 and 2021 had chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE. This condition is a degenerative brain disease that causes brain cells to die over time. It is known to be caused by repeated hits to the head.

For years, scientists have known that contact sports like American football carry risks. However, because CTE can only be diagnosed by examining the brain after a person has died, it has been difficult to know exactly how many players were affected. Past studies often relied on brains donated by families who were already worried about the player's health. This meant the results might not have represented all players accurately. To solve this, researchers from Mass General Brigham looked at a wider group of people, including all former NFL players who died between 2008 and 2021.

Dr. Daniel Daneshvar, the lead author of the study, explained that the 25% figure is a "conservative minimum." This means the actual number of players with the disease could be much higher. In fact, the researchers noted that the possible rate of CTE among these players could be as high as 97.7%. While the true number is likely somewhere in the middle, the findings serve as a serious warning to the sports community. Medical experts Tobias Kurth and Richard Riley, writing in an editorial for MedPage Today, noted that this new study is a significant step forward because it looks at a well-defined group of players rather than just those who donated their brains.

CTE is often associated with symptoms of dementia, such as memory loss, confusion, and major mood swings. The study found that the most severe form of the disease, known as Stage IV CTE, was frequently linked to these dementia symptoms. Because the disease is progressive, it often gets worse as the person ages, making it a major health concern for retired athletes.

This is not the first time the NFL has faced questions about player safety. In 2016, the league agreed to a $1 billion settlement to resolve a long-running legal case involving thousands of former players. Since then, there have been various efforts to change how the game is played, such as limiting the number of contact practices during the week.
