Peru Faces a Critical Choice in Presidential Election

Peru is at a major turning point today as citizens head to the polls to elect their next president. This election is particularly significant because it marks the tenth time in just one decade that the nation has sought a new leader. According to NPR News, the race is a very tight contest between two candidates: Keiko Fujimori, who represents the hard-right, and Roberto Sánchez, who represents the left.

Keiko Fujimori is a well-known figure in Peruvian politics. She is the daughter of the late Alberto Fujimori, a former president who was known for his strong, often harsh, leadership style. Supporters remember her father for ending high inflation and stopping violent groups in the 1980s and 1990s. However, his time in office was also marked by serious corruption, the closing of congress, and the creation of secret groups that committed crimes.
