Record Parasite Outbreak Tests U.S. Food Safety System

The United States is currently dealing with a massive outbreak of cyclosporiasis, a diarrheal disease caused by a parasite. According to NPR, the number of confirmed cases has reached nearly 14,000, with officials suspecting at least 10,000 additional cases. Ars Technica reports that the total number of people sickened has surpassed 24,000, with two deaths linked to the outbreak. The illness is largely connected to contaminated iceberg lettuce grown in Mexico.

This record-breaking health crisis is putting federal agencies under pressure. Experts say that recent budget cuts have weakened the government’s ability to respond to such emergencies. Susan Mayne, a former official at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), explained that the FDA is responsible for monitoring most of the food Americans eat, including produce. She noted that previous budget cuts led to the loss of many staff members, including teams that worked with international partners to manage food safety issues. While a spokesperson for Health and Human Services (HHS) stated that some international teams have been reinstated, experts remain concerned about the loss of experienced microbiologists and researchers.

Changes at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have also caused alarm. Dan Jernigan, a former CDC official, noted that the agency has reduced the number of pathogens it tracks in its foodborne illness database. Cyclospora—the parasite causing the current outbreak—was removed from this list. Jernigan explained that because of lower funding and fewer staff, the CDC is now focusing only on the largest outbreaks that cross state lines, rather than helping states with every case. However, HHS stated in a report to NPR that the CDC’s labs were not affected by the budget cuts.

The response to the outbreak has also become a political issue. Senator Elizabeth Warren has raised concerns about the government’s handling of the situation, calling the response “botched” and “marred by missteps.” In a letter, she questioned whether political influence played a role in the government's actions. Ars Technica reports that Taylor Farms, a large produce distributor linked to the contaminated lettuce, made significant donations to groups supporting the Trump administration.

Senator Warren also pointed out that Taylor Farms hired a former White House official to lobby on their behalf. Reports suggest that this representative helped arrange a direct call between the company and the White House after the FDA linked the lettuce to the outbreak. During this call, the company allegedly asked the government to delay a recall—a process where a company asks customers to return or stop using a product because it is unsafe. There are also questions about why some restaurants began pulling lettuce from their menus before any official federal recall was announced.

These events have created a difficult situation for public health. Experts like Susan Mayne argue that the lack of clear action and communication from the government has made the food safety system more vulnerable. She noted that it is now harder to prevent, trace, and contain foodborne illnesses. As the outbreak continues, health officials are advising Americans to cook their vegetables to at least 158°F to kill the parasite.

The current situation highlights the importance of a strong, well-funded food safety network. With the government’s readiness being tested, the debate over how to balance budget goals with the need to protect public health is likely to continue. For now, the focus remains on managing the record number of cases and ensuring that the food supply is safe for consumers across the country.
