Super Typhoon Bavi Hits US Pacific Islands

Residents of Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands are facing a dangerous situation as Super Typhoon Bavi makes landfall. The storm, which the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) classifies as a super typhoon, is bringing powerful winds and heavy rain to the region. According to the US National Weather Service (NWS), the storm is expected to cause catastrophic damage, with wind speeds reaching nearly 290 kilometers per hour.

As the storm approached on Sunday, local authorities urged people to take immediate action. Guam Governor Lou Leon Guerrero declared a state of emergency, telling residents to stay off the roads and remain in their homes. In many areas, schools have been opened as emergency shelters. However, officials reported that some of these sites reached their maximum capacity quickly, forcing people to find other safe places to stay.

For many, this is a very stressful time. The island of Rota, located northeast of Guam, is expected to take a direct hit. Meanwhile, tourists have also been affected, with many flights being cancelled. Miku Sakurai, a visitor from Japan, told reporters that she was scared and planned to stay inside her hotel until the storm passed.

Scientists say that storms of this strength are becoming more common in the western Pacific. According to the BBC, Bavi is the 11th category four or five tropical cyclone to hit US territory in the last decade. This is a significant increase compared to the previous 57 years. Experts point to climate change and warmer sea surface temperatures as major reasons for this trend. When ocean water is warmer, it puts more moisture into the air, which acts like fuel for storms, making them wetter and stronger.

Furthermore, a weather pattern known as El Niño is contributing to the problem. El Niño is a periodic warming of the ocean surface in the Pacific that changes global weather patterns. According to the United Nations, this phenomenon is expected to push more storms toward higher intensities in the coming months. Because of these factors, the NWS and other officials have been warning residents to prepare for the worst.

Despite the clear danger, some people have not followed safety advice. While most streets were empty on Sunday, reports indicated that a small group of surfers went into the water at Guam’s Talofofo Bay to enjoy the large waves. Officials have repeatedly warned that it is unsafe to be outdoors or near the water during such a powerful storm.

As the storm continues to move through the islands, the focus remains on safety. The NWS has advised everyone to treat the extreme winds as if a tornado were approaching, suggesting that people move to an interior room without windows. With flash flood warnings in effect and the potential for major structural damage, the coming days will be a difficult test for the people of Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands.
