Taiwan Reaffirms Status Following Recent US-China Talks

Taiwan has officially insisted that it is a sovereign, independent nation following recent comments made by US President Donald Trump. The statement came after President Trump returned from a high-stakes summit in Beijing, where he held discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping regarding the self-governing island. China views Taiwan as part of its own territory and has frequently stated that it does not rule out using force to bring the island under its control.

During his trip, President Trump told reporters that he and President Xi had spoken extensively about Taiwan. In a later interview with Fox News, Trump warned Taiwan against taking steps toward a formal declaration of independence. He also emphasized that he did not want to see conflict in the region, stating that he wanted both sides to "cool down." According to BBC News, the US president noted that he had not made any specific commitments regarding whether the United States would defend the island if a conflict were to occur.

In response to these remarks, Karen Kuo, a spokesperson for Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te, stated that it was "self-evident" that Taiwan is already a sovereign and independent democratic country. However, she added that the government remains committed to maintaining the status quo. This means that Taiwan does not plan to formally declare independence, nor does it intend to unite with China. Beyond the diplomatic language, a major point of discussion involves the sale of military equipment. According to Deutsche Welle, Taiwan is currently pressing the US government to approve a new, large-scale arms package. While the Trump administration approved an $11 billion deal in December, reports suggest that a second package, potentially worth $14 billion, is still waiting for final approval.
