Texas Pauses New Data Center Power Connections Amid Growing Energy Demands

Texas has taken a major step to protect its electricity supply by pausing all new power grid connections for data centers. This decision, announced by Governor Greg Abbott on August 3, comes as the state deals with an overwhelming number of requests for power. The pause will remain in place until developers can provide more information about how their projects will affect local communities and the state's energy system.

According to Ars Technica, Texas has been very successful at bringing in data centers by offering cheap land, tax breaks, and fewer regulations. These efforts were designed to make Texas the center of artificial intelligence development in the United States. In fact, the state was recently on track to become the largest data center market in the country, passing Virginia.

However, the rapid growth of the AI industry has created a new challenge. The Electric Reliability Council of Texas, known as ERCOT, is the organization that manages the power grid for most of the state. ERCOT operates a system that is separate from the rest of the country. According to Ars Technica, the current list of projects waiting to connect to the grid is massive. There are more than 1,800 projects in the queue, representing over 474 gigawatts of power. To put this in perspective, this amount is more than five times the highest amount of electricity Texas has ever used at one time. About 90 percent of these requests come from data centers.

Governor Abbott’s office stated that this huge growth in energy demand could put the reliability and stability of the Texas electric grid at risk. Reliability refers to the ability of the grid to provide electricity consistently without failing. Because of these concerns, the governor has directed the Public Utility Commission of Texas and ERCOT to perform a full audit of all data centers currently in the process of connecting to the grid. While many of the 1,800 projects in the queue may never actually be built, the pressure on the grid remains high. The Texas Tribune reports that ERCOT expects electricity demand across the state could double by 2032. This increase is driven by the growth of data centers and other factors.
