The United States and Iran are currently involved in high-level discussions that could lead to an end to their ongoing war. President Donald Trump recently stated that he has had very good talks with Iranian officials over the last 24 hours. According to reports from the BBC and Al Jazeera, the White House believes it is close to reaching a 14-point agreement with Iran. This document would serve as a framework to stop the fighting and begin more detailed negotiations on sensitive topics, such as Iran’s nuclear program.

For months, the war has caused significant global problems. A major point of tension is the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway that is essential for the world’s oil and gas supply. Since the conflict began on February 28, the strait has been effectively closed, leading to higher fuel prices worldwide. The United States has maintained a naval blockade—a military effort to stop ships from entering or leaving specific ports—to pressure Iran. President Trump has used both diplomacy and threats to influence the outcome. On his social media platform, he warned that if a deal is not reached, the U.S. would return to bombing Iran with higher intensity than before. At the same time, he announced a pause in "Project Freedom," a U.S. military operation that was designed to escort merchant ships through the Strait of Hormuz. According to The Guardian, this pause followed concerns from regional allies, specifically Saudi Arabia, who were surprised by the initial plan. By pausing the operation, the U.S. aimed to regain access to important military bases and airspace in the region.

There is also disagreement over what the potential deal would actually cover. While some reports suggest the agreement would address nuclear issues, sanctions, and the shipping route, Iranian negotiators have stated that they are currently only discussing the end of the war. They noted that nuclear issues would be handled at a later stage. The U.S. has maintained that Iran must not possess nuclear weapons, with President Trump emphasizing that he wants to reach a deal before his upcoming trip to China.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps has stated that it will facilitate safe passage through the strait, though it remains unclear how this will work in practice. The U.S. State Department has stated that Washington cannot allow any single country to control an international waterway.
