Ukraine Launches Major Drone Attacks on Russian Oil Facilities

Ukraine recently launched a significant overnight drone attack targeting oil terminals and port infrastructure in and around the Russian city of St Petersburg. This move marks an increase in Ukraine’s efforts to strike deep inside Russian territory, focusing on the energy facilities that help fund Russia’s ongoing war effort. According to The Guardian World, the attack affected several locations, including the St Petersburg oil terminal and the port of Vysotsk, which is located about 170 kilometers north-west of the city on the Baltic Sea.

Alexander Beglov, the governor of St Petersburg, confirmed that the city faced a large-scale drone attack. He stated that the oil terminal was hit, though he noted there were no casualties and that local authorities had managed the situation. In the nearby Leningrad region, Governor Alexander Drozdenko reported that 72 drones were shot down. While he confirmed minor damage in several settlements, he provided no specific details regarding the impact on the Vysotsk port, which is a key hub for oil, grain, coal, and liquefied natural gas.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the operation as part of a strategy of “long-range sanctions.” Sanctions are official restrictions or penalties, often economic, placed on a country to force it to change its behavior. Zelenskyy explained that these strikes aim to damage the oil infrastructure that provides money for Russia’s military. He also claimed that Ukrainian forces targeted Kronstadt, a major naval base near St Petersburg. However, there has been no official confirmation from Russia regarding any strike on that specific military site.

Russian President Vladimir Putin dismissed the importance of these attacks on energy facilities, calling them “not critical.” Despite this, Ukraine has been increasing its use of drones against Russian energy infrastructure throughout this year. These attacks have caused significant damage to oil refineries, leading to petrol shortages across Russia’s vast territory. Beyond the St Petersburg area, other regions also reported drone activity. In the Bryansk region and Russian-controlled Crimea, officials reported that one person was killed in each area, with several others wounded. Meanwhile, in the Pskov region, the local governor reported that over 30 drones were shot down, resulting in minor damage and injuries at a factory.

While the drone strikes dominated the news, there was also a sharp disagreement regarding the situation on the ground in eastern Ukraine. The Russian military claimed that its forces had taken control of the city of Kostiantynivka. This city is considered a vital part of the defensive line that Ukraine uses to protect the industrial Donetsk region. Russia’s defense ministry also claimed to have captured five smaller villages in the Kharkiv and Donetsk regions.

President Zelenskyy quickly denied these claims, calling them a “Russian lie” and an attempt to create a false news story. He stated on social media that if the city were truly under Russian control, President Putin would have no trouble meeting him there to discuss a diplomatic way to end the war. A diplomatic solution refers to an agreement reached through talks and negotiations rather than through fighting. Ukraine’s general staff also supported the president’s position, stating that their military units continue to conduct defensive operations within the town and along its borders.

As Ukraine continues to use long-range drones to disrupt Russia’s economic and military capabilities, Russia remains focused on territorial gains in the east.
