US and Nigeria Announce Death of Senior IS Leader

The United States and Nigeria have announced the death of a senior leader from the Islamic State (IS) group. The man, identified as Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, was killed during a joint military operation conducted by forces from both countries. US President Donald Trump confirmed the news on his social media platform, describing al-Minuki as the second-in-command of the IS organization globally and calling him one of the most active terrorists in the world.

According to the BBC, the operation took place in the Lake Chad Basin, a large area of water and land shared by Nigeria, Chad, Niger, and Cameroon. This region has long been a base for militant groups like Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP). Nigerian President Bola Tinubu stated that the mission was a daring success that dealt a heavy blow to the terrorist group. He confirmed that al-Minuki was killed alongside several of his top assistants during a strike on his base.

The Nigerian military provided further details, noting that the operation began shortly after midnight on a Saturday. They reported that the mission was the result of months of careful intelligence gathering and reconnaissance. A military spokesperson stated that there were no casualties or loss of equipment among the forces involved, highlighting the growing cooperation between Nigerian and US military teams. The US has recently increased its presence in Nigeria, deploying drones and roughly 200 troops to provide training and information support to local forces.

Al-Minuki was a well-known figure in the region. According to NPR, he was born in Nigeria’s Borno State and had been a senior commander for Boko Haram before the group pledged its loyalty to IS in 2015. He was later designated as a global terrorist by the US government in 2023. Officials believe he played a key role in the group’s administrative body, which manages funding and provides guidance for IS operations around the world. Some reports also link him to the 2018 kidnapping of over 100 schoolgirls in north-eastern Nigeria.

Analysts have noted the significance of this event. Malik Samuel, a researcher at Good Governance Africa, told NPR that if the death is confirmed, it would be a major development because it marks the first time security forces have successfully targeted someone so high in the IS hierarchy. He added that the operation likely caused significant chaos within the group, as the strike took place deep inside a fortified base that is usually very difficult for security forces to access.

However, the situation remains complex. The Nigerian military has faced criticism in the past for making similar claims about killing militant leaders, only to later discover the information was incorrect. For example, the military previously claimed to have killed al-Minuki in 2024, but later admitted that the person killed was actually a different fighter using the same name. Despite this history, the current announcement is being treated as a major victory by both Washington and Abuja.

The operation comes at a time of heightened political tension. President Trump has previously accused the Nigerian government of failing to protect Christians from militant violence in the north-west. The Nigerian government has consistently denied these claims, stating that its security forces work to protect all citizens regardless of their religion. In response to the security crisis, the US has increased its military involvement, launching strikes against IS-linked militants in December and sending advisors to the region earlier this year.

Looking ahead, the death of al-Minuki is expected to disrupt the funding and command structures of IS in Africa. With about 90% of IS attacks now occurring in sub-Saharan Africa, the region has become the primary focus for the group. By removing a leader who was responsible for planning attacks against both local communities and international interests, the US and Nigeria hope to weaken the group’s influence. While the long-term impact on regional security remains to be seen, officials from both nations view this mission as a clear sign that their partnership is becoming more effective in the fight against terrorism.
