US and Nigeria Announce Death of Senior Islamic State Leader

United States and Nigerian military forces have announced the death of a senior leader from the Islamic State (IS) group. The operation, which took place late last week, targeted Abu-Bilal al-Minuki at his compound in the Lake Chad Basin. This area is a large region of water and land shared by Nigeria, Chad, Niger, and Cameroon. It has long served as a base for various militant groups, including Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).

US President Donald Trump confirmed the mission on his social media platform. He described al-Minuki as the "second in command" of the Islamic State globally and called him the "most active terrorist in the world." According to the US government, al-Minuki was responsible for organizing and financing operations, and he had been plotting attacks against American interests. The US had previously placed him under sanctions in 2023, officially naming him a "Specially Designated Global Terrorist."

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu praised the mission, calling it a "daring joint operation" that dealt a heavy blow to the terrorist organization. A spokesperson for the Nigerian military stated that the mission was the result of months of intelligence gathering and careful planning. The military reported that no Nigerian or American personnel were hurt during the strike, which also resulted in the deaths of several of al-Minuki’s top assistants.

This operation represents a significant change in how the two countries work together. In recent months, the United States has increased its support for the Nigerian military by providing drones and sending approximately 200 troops to offer training and intelligence advice. While US forces are officially in a non-combat role, this joint strike shows that the partnership has become more active. Experts note that the Islamic State has shifted its focus in recent years. Today, about 90% of the group's attacks occur in sub-Saharan Africa. The group’s goal has been to establish a "caliphate"—a state ruled by a single political and religious leader following Islamic law. Al-Minuki was a key figure in this effort. He was originally a commander for Boko Haram before the group pledged its loyalty to the Islamic State in 2015. He was also linked to the 2018 kidnapping of over 100 schoolgirls from a boarding school in north-eastern Nigeria.

Despite the success of the mission, the situation remains complex. The Nigerian military has previously made claims about killing high-level militants, only to later find that they were mistaken or that the person was still alive. For example, the military once claimed to have killed a different fighter using the same name as al-Minuki in 2024. However, officials are confident that this latest operation has successfully removed a major threat. Malik Samuel, a researcher at Good Governance Africa, stated that if the death is confirmed, it could cause significant confusion and chaos within the ISWAP network because the strike hit the heart of their most protected base.

There have also been political tensions between the two nations. President Trump has previously criticized the Nigerian government, claiming it was not doing enough to protect Christians from militant violence in the north-west. The Nigerian government has strongly denied these claims, stating that its security forces work to protect all citizens regardless of their religion. Despite these disagreements, the recent joint operation suggests that both countries are committed to working together to stop the spread of extremist groups in West Africa.

Looking ahead, the death of al-Minuki is expected to weaken the Islamic State's ability to plan and fund its operations. President Trump noted that with his removal, the group's global activities are "greatly diminished." As the Nigerian military continues its fight against multiple armed groups, this mission serves as a clear sign of the growing influence of the US-Nigeria security partnership in the region.
