A serious health crisis is unfolding across the United States as a parasite known as cyclospora continues to make thousands of people sick. The illness, called cyclosporiasis, is caused by a microscopic parasite that lives on raw produce like lettuce. As the number of cases rises, former government officials are now demanding an independent review of how federal agencies have managed the situation.

Frank Yiannas, who served as a top food safety official at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) from 2018 to 2023, recently described the federal response as approaching a "catastrophic level." According to The Guardian Health, Yiannas stated that the government has failed to provide clear leadership. He noted that mixed messages from officials have caused widespread public confusion. The parasite is difficult to manage because it cannot be killed by standard cleaning processes used in farming. It is often spread when water used for irrigation is contaminated by human waste.

The situation has been made worse by mistakes in the investigation process. The FDA previously identified lettuce from a company called Taylor Farms as the source of the outbreak. However, the agency later had to backtrack on this claim. While the FDA maintains that there is strong evidence connecting the company to the issue, Taylor Farms has stated that the agency apologized for the error—a claim the FDA has denied. This confusion has left many Americans feeling unsure about the safety of the food they buy at the grocery store.

For many people, the outbreak has changed daily habits. Some individuals who previously focused on eating healthy diets filled with fresh vegetables are now reconsidering their choices. According to The Guardian Health, some are even returning to processed fast food because they feel it is safer than fresh produce that might carry the parasite. This fear is understandable, as the outbreak has already affected more than 4,000 people, with thousands more likely to have been impacted. The FDA is currently looking into 7,400 potential cases across nine states.

Adding to the public's frustration is the belief that government support for food safety has weakened. Critics point out that in 2025, a program run by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reduced the number of foodborne illnesses it tracks. Cyclosporiasis was one of the illnesses removed from that specific tracking list. This has led some to wonder if the government is properly equipped to handle such a large-scale health event. While US health secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. claimed last week that the outbreak was "under control," the ongoing investigation suggests that the problem is far from solved.

Looking ahead, the demand for accountability is growing. Yiannas has suggested that an independent inspector or a congressional review is necessary to understand what went wrong. He believes that the FDA acted too quickly in some areas and made mistakes that could have been avoided. He argues that the agency should be more open about its processes and explain how it plans to prevent similar outbreaks in the future. The FDA has not yet responded to these calls for an investigation into its actions.

As the investigation continues, the focus remains on identifying the true source of the contamination. Until the government can provide clear answers and restore public trust, many Americans will likely continue to view fresh produce with caution.
