The United States and Iran have signaled progress toward a framework agreement that could end a nearly three-month period of intense conflict. According to BBC News, US President Donald Trump stated that a deal has been "largely negotiated" and that details will be shared with the public soon. This potential agreement aims to address several major issues, most notably the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway that is essential for global oil and gas shipments.

This new sense of hope comes after a very difficult period in the Middle East. The current conflict began on February 28, when the US and Israel launched wide-ranging military strikes on Iran. In response, Iran attacked Israel and US-allied nations in the Gulf region. Since early April, a ceasefire — an agreement to stop fighting — has been in place.
