US Launches New Military Strikes on Iran as Tensions Rise

The United States has launched a new round of military strikes on Iran, marking a significant increase in tensions between the two nations. According to BBC News, explosions were reported across several cities in southern Iran, including Sirik, Bandar Abbas, Konarak, and Chabahar. These strikes come after an overnight exchange of attacks between the two countries earlier this week.

President Donald Trump described the latest military action as "retribution" for the bombing of ships by Iran. In a post on Truth Social, the President warned that if such attacks on commercial vessels happen again, the situation for Iran "will get much worse." The US Central Command (Centcom) stated that the strikes were necessary to protect the freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for international shipping. US officials claim that Iran has been responsible for unjustified aggression against commercial ships and their civilian crews.

This latest violence follows the collapse of a recent diplomatic agreement. Last month, the US and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU)—a formal agreement between two parties—that included a 60-day period for a ceasefire, which is an agreement to stop fighting. However, President Trump announced on Wednesday that this deal is now "over," stating that he believes further negotiations would be a waste of time. In response to the strikes, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi wrote on X that his country would not respond with insults, but with "action" taken with "great valour."

Reports from Iranian state media indicate that the damage from the US strikes is still being assessed. In Chabahar, power lines were cut, though local reports suggest that most have been restored. Additionally, a fire was reported at an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) barracks in Bushehr. Despite the intensity of the strikes, Iranian officials confirmed that the Bushehr nuclear power plant was not damaged. Meanwhile, Iranian air defence systems were activated in Bandar Abbas to respond to the incoming projectiles.

The situation remains highly volatile as Iran prepares for the burial of its former leader, Ali Khamenei. Millions of people are expected to gather in the city of Mashhad for the funeral ceremony. The death of Khamenei in February was one of the events that first triggered the current war. As the country mourns, there is growing international concern that the conflict could expand. The United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, has called on all parties to show "maximum restraint" to prevent the situation from becoming even more dangerous.

US Senator Bernie Sanders criticized the strategy on social media, arguing that restarting the conflict would not make America stronger and would only lead to more lost lives and wasted money. Meanwhile, Iran has been in contact with regional partners, including Qatar, to discuss the importance of using diplomatic means to resolve the issues.

Experts are closely watching the next moves from both sides. Fatemeh Aman, an expert on Iran, told The Guardian that the latest attacks significantly raise the risk of a broader conflict.
