Millions of Pounds Lost as England Faces Major Medicine Waste

A new report has highlighted a major problem within England’s healthcare system: the massive amount of medicine that goes to waste every year. According to the National Pharmacy Association (NPA), the total weight of unused or partly used medicine thrown away in England during 2024-25 reached 3,400 tonnes. To help people understand the scale of this issue, the group noted that this amount of waste could fill 75 swimming pools.

This problem is not just about physical waste; it is also a significant financial burden. The NPA estimates that this waste costs the National Health Service (NHS) at least £480 million every year. Olivier Picard, the chair of the NPA, explained that this is money that could be better spent on improving services for patients. He noted that once a medicine leaves a pharmacy, it cannot be given to another person, even if the bottle remains unopened. Because of safety rules, the medicine must be destroyed.

Beyond the financial cost, experts are worried about the impact on the environment and patient safety. Dr. Rasha Abdelsalam Elshenawy, a senior lecturer at the University of Hertfordshire, warned that leftover drugs create serious risks. She explained that when patients keep leftover antibiotics at home, they might take them later without talking to a doctor. This behavior can lead to antimicrobial resistance — a situation where germs become stronger and medicine stops working as well as it should. Dr. Elshenawy described this as one of the biggest threats to modern medicine today.

To address this, the NPA, which represents 6,000 independent community pharmacies, is calling for changes to how patients receive their repeat prescriptions. A repeat prescription is a regular order for medicine that a patient needs over a long period. The organization suggests that patients who take several different medicines should have their prescriptions reviewed more often. These reviews would allow pharmacists to check if a patient still needs all their current drugs or if some can be stopped. The NPA also urged the public to be more careful and avoid ordering more medicine than they actually need.

This issue of waste is particularly difficult because it comes at a time when England is already facing supply problems. In June, health leaders warned that the country is experiencing some of the most severe shortages of common medicines on record. These shortages include common painkillers, as well as specific drugs for epilepsy and hormone replacement therapy (HRT). The Royal College of GPs and the NPA have both pointed to long-lasting supply issues for important medicines, such as those used by menopausal women and patients with pancreatic cancer or cystic fibrosis.

In response to these concerns, an NHS England spokesperson said that the health service is taking steps to help people manage their prescriptions more effectively. The NHS is encouraging patients to use the official NHS app on their mobile phones to track and order their repeat prescriptions. By using digital tools, the health service hopes that patients will have better control over their medication orders and avoid unnecessary waste.

Furthermore, the NHS spokesperson noted that several local services are currently running campaigns to reduce medicine waste. These efforts are part of a wider goal to make sure that medicines are used in the best possible way. The spokesperson added that the total number of dependency-forming medications—drugs that a person can become physically reliant on—has fallen over the last decade, showing that progress is being made in other areas of medicine management.

Ultimately, the challenge is to balance the need for easy access to medicine with the need for responsible use. Pharmacists are encouraging patients to speak up if they have any concerns about their treatment. By working together, patients and healthcare professionals hope to lower the amount of wasted medicine, save money for the NHS, and keep patients safer. As the NPA suggests, the best way to start is by only requesting what is truly necessary and ensuring that every medicine cabinet is regularly checked.
