Cyclospora Outbreak Expands to 15 States as Health Officials Respond

The United States is currently facing a large-scale outbreak of cyclosporiasis, a digestive illness caused by a microscopic parasite. According to The Guardian and MedPage Today, federal health officials have expanded the list of states officially linked to this outbreak to 15. The new states added to the list include Arkansas, Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, and North Carolina. This update follows earlier reports that identified cases in states such as Illinois, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Pennsylvania.

Cyclosporiasis is a form of food poisoning caused by a parasite known as Cyclospora cayetanensis. This parasite typically spreads through the fecal-oral route, which means it is most commonly passed on by eating food or drinking water that has been contaminated. Once a person is infected, they may experience symptoms such as watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, bloating, and extreme fatigue. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), these symptoms usually start about a week after a person is exposed to the parasite. Without proper treatment, the illness can last from a few days to over a month.

While the disease is often very uncomfortable, it is rarely fatal. However, the current situation has become more serious. Ars Technica reports that Michigan health officials recently confirmed the first two deaths linked to the outbreak. The state’s health department noted that both individuals had significant underlying health conditions that were likely made worse by the infection and the resulting dehydration. As of early August, there have been over 500 hospitalizations reported across the country due to this parasite.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has identified iceberg lettuce produced by Taylor Farms de Mexico as the source of one specific outbreak. In response to these findings, the company issued a voluntary recall of lettuce distributed to restaurants and grocery stores across many states. The CDC has warned the public to check for and avoid any recalled products. Health departments in the affected states, such as New Hampshire, have launched dedicated webpages to help residents identify if they have been exposed to the recalled food.

Despite the scale of the crisis, some observers have criticized the speed of the federal response. Ars Technica reports that the Trump administration has been working to organize a formal response team to better manage the situation. While the CDC and FDA have been investigating the outbreak since June, some of the latest updates regarding the spread to new states have been slow to appear on official public health websites. A spokesperson for the Department of Health and Human Services stated that information regarding the outbreak would be updated throughout the week.
