Is the Largest Cyclosporiasis Outbreak in U.S. History Finally Slowing Down?

The United States is currently facing its largest recorded outbreak of cyclosporiasis, a gastrointestinal illness caused by a single-celled parasite. As of late July, the number of suspected and confirmed cases has grown to more than 18,000. While the situation remains serious, there are signs that the wave of infections might be slowing down. According to The Guardian Health, a major laboratory test-maker has reported a decline in the percentage of positive test results for gastrointestinal parasites.

John Osiecki, a vice-president at the French company bioMerieux, expressed a sense of cautious optimism regarding the current data. The company produces a test panel that screens for 22 different stomach illnesses. Osiecki noted that while he feels confident about the current direction of the outbreak, public health officials must continue to monitor the situation closely. He believes that increased public awareness is playing a significant role in the recent trends, as more people are now actively avoiding lettuce in social settings due to concerns about the parasite.

However, experts warn that interpreting this data is complicated. The Guardian Health reports that the decline in positive test results could be misleading. Because more people are now choosing to get tested, a large number of negative results could artificially lower the positivity rate, even if the outbreak is still spreading. Furthermore, the bioMerieux test panel is expensive and is not equally available in all parts of the country, which may limit the accuracy of the data in rural areas.

Government agencies are moving more slowly but with greater certainty. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has officially confirmed 6,707 cases of cyclosporiasis acquired within the United States. They are currently working to verify an additional 11,500 suspected cases through interviews and medical records. The CDC has linked infections in at least nine states to iceberg lettuce produced by Taylor Farms in Mexico. The impact has been particularly severe in the Midwest, though the reach of the affected products is wide, with the lettuce sold in 27 states.

Even as some data points toward a decline, food safety researchers caution that the true scale of the outbreak may be larger than current numbers suggest. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is currently investigating several other outbreaks that do not yet have a known cause. Additionally, the virus continues to appear in unexpected places. For example, The Guardian Health noted that the New Hampshire department of health recently identified cases linked to the same Mexican-grown lettuce at a hospital cafeteria in Keene, even though that state was not previously considered part of the main outbreak area.

The current 15.6% positivity rate for parasite testing is significantly higher than the rates seen during the same period in previous years, highlighting the unusual nature of this event. As the CDC and FDA continue their work, the primary advice remains the same: stay informed, follow official health guidelines, and be aware of food safety alerts. Whether the decline in cases is a permanent trend or a temporary lull remains to be seen.
