Tensions Rise as Conflict Between US and Iran Spreads Across the Middle East

The conflict between the United States and Iran has entered a new and dangerous phase this week. After a short period of relative calm, the two countries have returned to a series of back-and-forth military attacks. This escalation has moved the region into what many experts call “uncharted territory,” as the fighting spreads across several borders and threatens to become a wider regional war.

The latest violence began after the United States carried out a heavy wave of strikes against Iran. According to US Central Command, these attacks targeted military command centers, as well as missile and drone facilities belonging to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The US military stated that these actions were necessary to reduce the threats posed by Iran to American forces, commercial ships, and neighboring countries in the Gulf region. Iranian state media reported that the strikes caused injuries on the island of Qeshm and explosions in the province of Khuzestan. The IRGC also confirmed that three of its members were killed in the province of Zanjan.

These US strikes followed a period of intense pressure after Iran targeted a base in Jordan that hosts American troops. In response to the US attacks, Iran appears to have retaliated against American allies. Kuwait reported that an Iranian strike hit a building and killed one person, while Jordan reported incoming missiles for two days in a row. These events highlight how quickly the fighting can move from one country to another, involving multiple nations in the region.

Iraq has found itself in the middle of this growing crisis. Earlier this week, the United States and Saudi Arabia conducted joint airstrikes against Iran-backed militias operating inside Iraq. These attacks resulted in the deaths of at least 20 fighters and six Iranian advisers. The Iraqi government reacted strongly to this news. Prime Minister Haider al-Aboudi decided to postpone a planned trip to Saudi Arabia because of the incident. A government spokesperson, Sabah al-Numan, stated that Baghdad had “no prior knowledge” of the attacks and did not give permission for them to happen on Iraqi territory.

There is also a clear disagreement regarding the cause of these tensions. Saudi Arabia recently claimed that drone strikes launched from Iraq had targeted its critical infrastructure. However, the Iraqi government has denied these claims, stating that no party has provided any evidence to support them. Iraqi officials have made it clear that they will not accept any one-sided actions—or unilateral actions—taken by foreign powers within their borders. At the same time, they insist that they will not allow their country to be used as a base for attacks against others.

Beyond the fighting in Iraq and Iran, the conflict is affecting other parts of the region. In Egypt, drone strikes caused fires on two natural gas vessels at the port of Damietta. While it is not yet clear who was responsible for these specific attacks, the incident marks the first time Egypt has been involved in the conflict since it began in late February. When asked if Iran was behind the incident, US President Donald Trump simply described it as “a little more of the same” and promised that the US would continue to hit back hard.

Despite the return to violence, international mediators are still trying to bring the two sides back to the negotiating table. A spokesperson for the Pakistani foreign ministry, Tahir Andrabi, stated that they are doing their “utmost” to restart talks. However, the recent exchange of strikes has made the diplomatic process much more difficult. The ongoing conflict has already caused significant problems for the world economy, and there is growing concern about how long this situation can continue before it causes even greater damage.

In a separate development, President Trump announced that his “Board of Peace” has reached an agreement for the complete disarmament of Hamas in Gaza. Disarmament is the process of taking away weapons from armed groups. Trump described this as a “major milestone” in his plan to end the war in Gaza. He explained that the agreement would happen in phases, eventually leading to the withdrawal of Israeli forces and the creation of a new Palestinian police force. While this announcement is a significant claim, it remains to be seen how it will be carried out or how it might affect the broader tensions between the US and Iran.
