US and Iran Exchange Military Strikes as Tensions Rise

The United States has launched a new series of airstrikes against Iran, marking a significant increase in military tension in the Middle East. These strikes happened only hours after President Donald Trump threatened to escalate the conflict. The US military reported hitting about 90 targets, including missile launchers and a runway, in an effort to respond to recent Iranian attacks on commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz.

According to The Guardian, these events have effectively ended a memorandum of understanding (MoU) — a formal agreement between two sides to work toward a goal — that was signed on June 17. That agreement was intended to extend a ceasefire, which is a temporary pause in fighting, and to provide time for negotiations for a permanent peace. However, following the latest violence, President Trump stated on Truth Social that the agreement is now over. He warned that if Iran continues to attack ships, the situation will get much worse.

Iran responded to the US strikes by targeting US-allied nations in the region. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps reported that it fired 10 ballistic missiles at the Azraq military base in Jordan, which is used by the US air force. Additionally, sirens sounded multiple times in Bahrain, where the US navy’s fifth fleet is based. Iran also targeted areas in Kuwait and Qatar. While these actions caused significant alarm, there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries in the Gulf region or Jordan.

One of the most serious concerns involves the location of the US strikes. Iranian officials stated that the military action reached the perimeter of the country’s only civilian nuclear power plant in Bushehr province. Ehsan Jahanian, the deputy governor of Bushehr, said that several areas were hit, including a military base and a fishing pier. The United Nations’ nuclear watchdog has previously warned that any military activity near such sites could pose a very real danger to nuclear safety. So far, there have been no reports of casualties in these areas.

These attacks are taking place during a period of national mourning in Iran. The country is currently burying its former supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. A fighter jet escorted the plane carrying his coffin to his home city of Mashhad. Despite the tense security situation, large crowds gathered to pay their respects, with some people holding banners that promised revenge against the United States. Meanwhile, the new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, has not been seen in public since he was wounded in the same series of strikes that killed his father.

The international community is watching the situation closely. Israel’s defence minister, Israel Katz, stated that his country is prepared to restart its own military campaign against Iran if necessary, promising to act with even greater force. The back-and-forth attacks have already caused global oil prices to rise, though they later returned to normal levels once the situation became calmer.

Experts are worried that the breakdown of the ceasefire will make future peace talks much harder to achieve. Significant gaps remain between Washington and Tehran regarding several key issues. These include Iran’s control over the Strait of Hormuz and the rules for international inspections of Iranian nuclear facilities. While President Trump has suggested that the current military action would be fast and not lead to long-term fighting, the current level of violence is the most intense seen in several weeks.

As the situation develops, the world remains focused on whether the two nations can return to the negotiating table or if the conflict will continue to grow. With military forces on high alert and diplomatic channels currently closed, the risk of further escalation remains high. For now, both sides continue to use military force to show their strength, leaving the future of the region uncertain.
