Europe Struggles as Wildfires Continue to Burn Across the Continent

Across Europe, emergency services are working to control a wave of dangerous wildfires that have been burning for weeks. The continent has experienced long periods of hot and dry weather, which has made it very easy for fires to start and spread. According to data from the European Forest Fire Information System, about 576,000 hectares of land have already burned this year. This is an area twice the size of Luxembourg. While Europe had its worst fire season on record last year, experts fear that 2026 could be even worse.

In Belgium, firefighters are currently battling the largest wildfire in the country's modern history. The fire broke out in the High Fens park, which is located on the border with Germany. It has destroyed approximately 3,000 hectares of land. King Philippe visited the area to meet with emergency teams and local leaders, describing the park as a national treasure. To help stop the fire, the European Union has sent two Swedish planes and several helicopters from the Netherlands, Norway, and Germany. Germany’s Defense Ministry also provided two military water-bombing helicopters to assist the efforts. On Monday, light rain finally arrived in the region, offering some hope to the exhausted crews.

Meanwhile, the situation in France has become politically tense. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu visited the village of Le Porge, which was badly affected by a massive fire last month. During his visit, residents booed the Prime Minister and criticized the government's response to the disaster. Many locals believe that authorities prioritized the protection of wealthier areas, such as the upscale Cap-Ferret peninsula, over their own homes. In response, the government announced 12 million euros in aid to support the affected communities. Mr. Lecornu also warned that the country must now prepare for the risk of floods during the coming autumn and winter.

Spain is also dealing with significant challenges. A major wildfire in the Aragon region has already destroyed 16,600 hectares of land and caused the death of a Spanish soldier. The fire has threatened a 1,000-year-old monastery, forcing hundreds of people to leave their homes. To help contain the blaze, French firefighters have joined local teams on the ground. The European Commission noted that it is providing satellite mapping through its Copernicus service to help track the movement of the fires across the continent.

In Greece, the situation is showing signs of improvement. After a difficult weekend, authorities reported that they have almost finished putting out two fires on the island of Salamina. These fires were particularly tragic, as they resulted in two deaths after strong winds caused the flames to spread very quickly. The Greek government expects weather conditions to improve on Tuesday, which will allow officials to lower the wildfire risk level in many parts of the country. However, the country remains cautious after a series of fires in recent weeks that have claimed seven lives in total.

Other countries are also feeling the impact of the extreme summer. In Portugal, hundreds of firefighters are working to put out several fires, though five firefighters were injured when their vehicle caught fire near the border with Spain. In the United Kingdom, the housing secretary visited the remains of homes in the West Midlands that were destroyed by a wildfire last week. This followed the country’s fifth heatwave of the summer, which saw temperatures reach 38 degrees Celsius.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated on social media that Europe’s solidarity is in full flight, as teams from different countries work together to protect lives and land. Despite this international support, the scale of the destruction remains a major concern for leaders and citizens alike. As the fire season continues, authorities are keeping a close watch on the weather, hoping for more rain and cooler temperatures to help bring the remaining fires under control.
