Greece Struggles as Fierce Wildfires Spread Near Athens

Greece is currently facing a difficult battle against a series of intense wildfires that have spread across the country. As of early August 2026, the situation remains critical, with fires reaching popular coastal areas. This comes after a summer where extreme heatwaves and very little rain have created perfect conditions for fires to start and grow quickly.

According to Deutsche Welle (DW), a major wildfire began on Friday near the village of Agios Vasileios. The fire has since moved toward the area of Porto Germeno, which is located about 70 kilometers northwest of Athens. More than 300 firefighters have been sent to the scene to try and stop the flames from spreading further. A spokesperson for the fire department told the French news agency AFP that the fire has already reached the sea and confirmed that homes in the area have been damaged.

One of the biggest challenges for the emergency teams is the weather. The National Observatory of Athens recorded wind speeds as high as 130 kilometers per hour on Saturday. These strong winds make it nearly impossible for firefighting aircraft to fly safely. Some aircraft have been moved to other fires in the Peloponnese region where the conditions are slightly calmer. Theodore Giannaros, a wildfire expert and researcher at the National Observatory of Athens, described the damage in the Porto Germeno area as "inconceivable."

This week has seen fires break out in many different parts of Greece. By Friday, more than 70 locations across the country were affected. The Greek fire brigade has placed the country at the highest level of alert, warning that the risk of new fires is especially high in the Attica peninsula and on the island of Evia. The mayor of Thebes, Giorgos Anastasiou, told Open TV that the damage to the environment is huge.

These events in Greece are part of a wider crisis across Europe. Throughout the summer, several countries have been fighting savage wildfires. The island of Crete has also been hit hard, with fires affecting about 5,000 hectares of land. Sadly, the human cost of these disasters is rising, with three firefighters having lost their lives so far while trying to protect their communities.

Earlier reports from late July and early August indicate that this is the most severe wildfire season in recent history for the continent. Data shows that the current fire conditions are much worse than the average levels seen over the last twenty years. While some countries, such as France and Spain, have reported making progress in controlling their own fires, the situation in Greece remains very unstable.

As the heat continues, authorities are focused on preventing further destruction. The combination of dry land, high temperatures, and powerful winds has made the work of firefighters extremely dangerous. For now, the priority for the Greek government and emergency services is to protect residents and stop the fires from reaching more populated areas. The public has been urged to stay alert as the country remains under a state of high emergency.
