New Daily Diabetes Pill Launches in UK Pharmacies

A new daily pill that helps treat type 2 diabetes and supports weight loss has officially arrived in UK pharmacies. The medication, called Foundayo, is produced by the US pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. It was recently approved by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), the government body responsible for ensuring medicines are safe for public use. The UK is the first country in Europe to make this specific treatment available to patients.

This launch follows the approval of another weight-loss pill in June. Foundayo is designed to be taken once a day, and patients do not need to worry about specific food or water restrictions when taking it. According to The Guardian Health, the drug is intended for people with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher. It is also available to those with a BMI between 27 and 30 who have at least one weight-related health condition. Additionally, it can help patients who struggle to control their blood sugar levels.

Khalil Asmar, the vice-president of cardiometabolic health at Lilly Northern Europe, stated that the company is pleased to offer another oral treatment option for eligible patients. He noted that this pill provides an alternative for those who cannot or do not want to use injectable medicines—treatments that are delivered into the body using a needle. Henry Gregg, the chief executive of the National Pharmacy Association, agreed, noting that the availability of this pill is a significant step for patients who find injections difficult or uncomfortable.

Currently, the drug is available through private prescription. Eli Lilly is working with the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (Nice) to see if the pill can be included in the National Health Service (NHS) in England. Henry Gregg from the National Pharmacy Association suggested that the government and the NHS should work harder to ensure that patients who truly need these treatments can get them. He expressed concern that, currently, access to weight management services depends too much on where a person lives, which he described as a "postcode lottery."

Despite the excitement surrounding the new pill, health experts have issued a serious warning regarding the rise of fake or unlicensed drugs. Because it is often easier to produce pills than it is to make injectable medicines, there is a growing market for counterfeit versions. These fake products can be dangerous because they are not regulated or tested for safety. The MHRA has already taken action against illegal sellers, including seizing £250,000 worth of unlicensed weight-loss pens and ingredients from a factory in Northampton last year. Eli Lilly is also taking legal action against suppliers they believe are involved in the illegal sale of their products.

Patients are being strongly urged to get their medicine only through safe, regulated pharmacies. By using official channels, patients can ensure they are receiving genuine medication that has been properly checked by health authorities. As the UK continues to lead Europe in providing these new treatment options, the focus remains on balancing the need for better health solutions with the importance of patient safety in a market where illegal products are becoming a larger problem.
