New Treatment for Type 1 Diabetes Now Available on the NHS

A significant medical breakthrough is now reaching patients in England and Wales. Following recent approval, the National Health Service (NHS) is making a new drug called teplizumab available to those at risk of developing type 1 diabetes. This development represents the first time in over a century that a treatment has been able to change the course of the disease rather than just managing its symptoms.

Type 1 diabetes is a condition where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin. Insulin is a vital hormone that helps the body turn sugar into energy. For decades, the only way to treat the disease has been to replace the missing insulin through daily injections or a pump. This requires constant monitoring of blood sugar levels, which creates a heavy, lifelong burden for patients and their families. According to The Guardian, this new immunotherapy drug does not cure the condition, but it can delay the start of symptoms for up to three years.

This delay offers a meaningful period of time for children and adults to live without the daily pressures of the disease. For many families, these extra years are highly valuable. Karen Addington, chief executive of the charity Breakthrough T1D, noted that if it were a loved one, anyone would want to provide them with more time free from the relentless demands of managing the condition. The NHS medicines body described the decision to approve the drug as genuinely exciting, with hundreds of young people expected to benefit each year.

Teplizumab is designed for children and adults aged eight and older who are in the early stages of the disease, known as stage 2. The treatment process involves receiving the medicine through a drip into a vein once a day for 14 days. By training the immune system to stop attacking the pancreas, the drug provides a window of relief before the disease progresses to the point where full-time insulin therapy is required. Dr. Elizabeth Robertson of Diabetes UK stated that this marks a new age of treatment, moving beyond simple insulin replacement to target the root cause of the condition.

Despite the excitement surrounding the drug, experts point out that there are still challenges to overcome. The primary issue is detection. Because the drug must be given before symptoms appear, patients need to know they are at risk early. Currently, there is no routine screening program for type 1 diabetes in the UK. Most people only find out they are at risk through blood tests done for other medical reasons or because they have a family history of the condition. However, BBC Health reports that most people diagnosed with the disease have no close family history, which suggests that environmental factors may also play a role.

Italy is currently the only country in the world with a national screening program for children. In the UK, diabetes charities are actively campaigning for similar testing to be introduced. Without a way to identify those at risk, many who could benefit from the drug might not be diagnosed in time to receive it. For now, the focus remains on ensuring that those who are eligible can access the treatment fairly.

The approval of teplizumab is the result of decades of research. While it is not a permanent solution, it provides a vital bridge for patients.
