Rescue Efforts Continue After Deadly Earthquake in Eastern Indonesia

Rescue teams in eastern Indonesia are working hard to reach remote villages after a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake hit the region early Saturday morning. According to The Guardian, the disaster has already caused at least 47 deaths. Authorities expect this number to rise as teams finally reach areas that were previously cut off from the outside world.

The earthquake struck the Flores region at a depth of about 15 kilometers. The shaking was so strong that it caused buildings to collapse and triggered landslides across the island. According to NPR, the epicenter was located about 42 miles north-northwest of the city of Ende. The event caused widespread panic, with many residents running to higher ground in fear of a tsunami.

While a tsunami warning was issued immediately after the quake, it was later lifted. Indonesian officials noted that while monitoring stations recorded small waves in several coastal areas, there were no significant changes to sea levels that would pose a major threat. However, the impact on local communities remains severe. Videos shared online show coastal villages covered in mud and debris, with fishing boats left stranded on the shore.

One of the biggest challenges for rescue workers is the loss of communication and blocked roads. The police chief of East Nusa Tenggara province, Rudi Darmoko, told reporters that power outages have made it very difficult for cities and villages to share information. Furthermore, landslides have blocked the Trans-Flores highway, a long mountain road that connects different parts of the island. Fathur Rahman, the head of the rescue agency in Maumere, explained that teams are now attempting to reach the Nagekeo region by ferry because land routes are completely closed.

For those who survived the initial shaking, life has become very difficult. NPR reports that at least 157 houses were flattened, and nearly 200 more were damaged. Additionally, more than 100 public buildings—including schools, churches, and medical centers—have been destroyed. As a result, about 2,000 people have been forced to move into temporary shelters to stay safe.

Local residents described the experience as terrifying. Yulian Juita Ekalia, a university professor living 60 miles from the epicenter, said the ground felt like a trampoline. In Nagekeo, residents like Lukas Lotar described patients fleeing hospitals as walls began to crack. Thankfully, many people were able to reach the hills in time, but the destruction to their homes and towns is extensive.

This disaster follows a pattern of seismic activity in the region. The Indonesian geophysics agency, BMKG, recorded at least 235 aftershocks—smaller earthquakes that happen after a main, larger one—following the initial event. While a separate 6.9-magnitude earthquake also struck North Sumatra on Saturday afternoon, authorities noted that it occurred very deep underground and caused no significant damage or casualties.

As the recovery process begins, the focus remains on reaching the most isolated areas. Suharyanto, the head of the National Disaster Management Agency, confirmed that rescuers are working across six different regencies to find survivors and clear debris. With many villages still buried or cut off, the full scale of the damage is not yet known. For now, the people of Flores are focused on finding shelter and waiting for news about their missing neighbors.
